Here is what I want to say to working moms who want to be a stay at home mom…
It can be done.
I was where you are six years ago. Working in a successful Career with a great salary plus benefits. I was doing work I loved, working with people I adored, yet I felt a sense of emptiness.
You see, I had two young children at home, and I was missing them terribly.
I never thought I would want to be a stay-at-home mom, but here I was now trying to figure out how to make the transition home.
We were a two-income household and we were living like a two and a half-income household. No way could we make it without my salary.
At least, that’s what we thought at the time.
But something kept propelling me forward, giving me the courage to try, helping me take step after step…and it paid off in the end.
You can move from working mom to stay at home mom. You just have to want it bad enough.
For me, that meant transitioning my career home. Not my literal job (I tried, but my company wouldn’t go for it at that time), but my skills and knowledge that could transfer over to an at-home job or Business.
So for other working moms out there whose hearts are at home and who want to make that transition, here are the steps I took and the resources that helped me:
How to Be a Stay At Home Mom
Start by finding a work-from-home job.
Job. Not a business, but a job.
This is where I started. I wanted a paying job with an established business or company.
Though my ultimate goal was to use my skills in starting my own home business, I knew initially I needed immediate pay while I designed my business plan.
Some of you may prefer to not just start with, but stay with a company and work for them from home, and that’s okay. You don’t have to start your own business in order to stay home.
Whichever path you choose, here are the steps to help you get there:
Step 1 – Start Where You Are
I would suggest starting with your current company, just to see if they allow telecommuting. Before talking with your boss, however, you should type up a proposal that lists:
- Your request and how it could benefit the company (i.e., the skills and knowledge they’d lose, the cost they’d incur to train a replacement, how they would strengthen their brand by supporting work/life balance, etc.),
- The job responsibilities/projects you would be able to complete from home,
- How you will deliver your completed work to the appropriate people,
- How you will manage and keep track of your time worked,
- Ways you will keep in touch with employer (i.e., phone in for meetings, attend monthly meetings in person, weekly status phone calls, etc.)
- Proposed start date and how you will transition.
It’s not a guarantee, but your company just may surprise you. Also, you can help pave the way for other moms that may come behind you.
Step 2 – Check Directly with Other Companies
If your company isn’t offering work-from-home opportunities, then it’s time to check out the competition. There are many other top Companies that do hire people to work from their homes. Here are just a few listings:

A quick google search will land you loads of other listings of companies that hire people to work from home.
Step 3 – Check Work at Home Job Postings
There are other small businesses and entrepreneurs who occasionally need contract workers to complete day-to-day or specialized tasks for them. This is an opportunity to use your unique skills gained from your corporate experience.
This was my next stop, and I found a contract position for a start-up business teaching courses online. I was a consultant and trainer for my previous company, so this was right up my alley.
If this is a direction you would like to explore, here are the sites I scoured daily for jobs that fit my skill-set:
Hire My Mom – A work from home job service that helps women find flexible, legitimate, home-based work. There is a quarterly membership fee which helps Hire My Mom ensure the quality of each of applicant. As a result, they are able to attract top-notch employers who allow telecommuting arrangements.
Mom Corps – This company focuses on helping experienced professionals find non-traditional careers. Their aim is to place moms in flexible or virtual positions. You simply register, search the job postings, and apply for ones that fit your skill set.
ProBlogger – If you are a blogger and would like to write for pay, this site’s job board features companies looking for bloggers to hire. Simply browse the listings and apply for ones that interest you.
Simply Hired – This site lists thousands of jobs available which can be narrowed down by category, city, state or zip.
WAHM Jobs – This site is dedicated to helping moms work from home. Their job postings help you find the best work at home jobs available while also helping you spot work from home scams.
Women for Hire – Founded by Tory Johnson, Women for Hire offers a wide variety of career-related information and videos geared to women looking for work from home. It also features an online job board that helps women professionals connect with top companies.
Other job boards, like Monster and Careers.com also list telecommuting positions as they come available.
How To Create a Work-From-Home Business
If you’d prefer to be your own boss, then it’s possible to turn your knowledge and skills into a paying at-home business. It takes identifying your strengths, finding a business that would best utilize those strengths, and then locating the people who could most use your products or services.
Step 1 – Discover What You are Good At Doing
There are many tools on the market today to help you identify your strengths and skills. Knowing this information can help you avoid wasting time, energy and money on a business you don’t enjoy and doesn’t earn you money.
To find out your top career skills and strengths, here are a few tests you can take:
Education Planner – Find out which career best matches your skills.
The RichardStep Strengths and Weaknesses Aptitude Test (RSWAT) – Gives you a better look at who you really are and your potential.
My Next Move – Site that helps you discover what your interests are and those careers that might match those interests. The results section allows you to search by how much preparation might be needed for each career.
Career Strengths Test – Developed by Johnson O’Connor Research Foundation for Oprah, this collection of tests helps you identify your strength level in a variety of different skills.
Now, Discover Your Strengths (affiliate link) – Probably my favorite resource for discovering the areas you naturally excel in more than others. A code in the book is used to access an online test to identify your strong areas and the book gives detailed explanations on each strength. Finding a home business that plays to your strengths can increase your chances of excelling.
Step 2 – Pick a Business That Matches Your Strengths
Now that you’ve identified your skills and strengths, it’s time to match them to the home business that best suits you.
A free resource to help you do this is 20 Savvy Start-ups Moms Can Launch for $100 or Less. This guide is a practical, step-by-step roadmap to discovering the ideal at-home career for you and will give you detailed steps on how to get started.
