Small World: Google Opens A Restaurant But Only For 4 Days

Small World

The search engine giant already offers so many services, starting from web browsers to apps and even those self-driving cars. Now Google is entering into the restaurant business by opening Small World in New York City.

The Mountain View company has opened Small World, a pop-up restaurant in the New York City’s Lower East Side, for promoting Google Translate. By looking at the exterior of the restaurant, it seems that customers with different languages will be able to translate the menu items using Translate on their smartphones.

Restaurateurs don’t need to consider it as a bad news, as the Google restaurant will be open only for four days, starting from April 15 to April 18, 2016. So Google is not here to compete with other restaurants, but just to promote Google Translate.

We build and connect around the food, no matter if you start things off with “bon appétit”, “Head isu! Jätku leiba!”, “itadakimasu”, or “bil haná wal shifá”. Food is the universal language and Google attempts to make languages around the world as our guide.

Small World

The restaurant will feature four guest chefs who will take you on a journey through the lens of food. Each one of the prominent chefs will be presenting cuisine from a different part of the world.

  • On 15th April, former head chef of EI Rey, Gerardo Gonzalez will be satisfying your cravings for Mexican cuisine with Andy Baraghani, Josh Russ Tupper, Niki Russ Federman, Atsushi Numata, and Mixologist Sam Anderson.
  • On 16th April, Joseph “JJ” Johnson, who is the James Beard-nominated Executive Chef will be showcasing Afro-Asian-American cuisine with Miguel Trinidad, Andre Lima de Luca, Aaron Arizpe, and Mixologist Pamela Wiznitzer.
  • On 17th April, Danny Bowien, the owner and founder of Mission Chinese and Mission Cantina will present his take on Asian cuisine with Andy Ricker, Paolp Laboa, Inaki Aizpitarte, and Angela Dimayuga.
  • On 18th April, Einat Admony, the chef and owner of Balaboosta, Bar Bolonat, Taim, and Combina will take the helm for Israeli cuisine with Liz Kwon, Mads Refslund, Donal Crosbie, and Mixologist Sam Anderson.

If you recall, this isn’t for the first time that Google has involved in food-selling for promoting tech products. Google sold wafles not waffles, promoting Google Photos.

Small World requires prior reservation for first seating i.e. 6:00pm to 8:00pm and for second seating i.e. 9:30pm to 11:30pm. Unfortunately, the reservations are already sold-out. However, if you haven’t grabbed a reservation, Google is offering free dough donuts to everyone from 3:00pm to 7:00pm for all four days. Horchata donut, anyone?
