How to get started in an eco-friendly career

As the adverse effects of global warming become ever-more apparent, the Environment is becoming an increasing driving factor in business operations across all industries. Governments worldwide are leading the way in a movement to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and to champion more sustainable living, evidenced by new international alliances and the recent policy pledges made at COP26, and companies of all shapes and sizes are rushing to follow suit.

Given this global drive towards sustainability, there are a flurry of new job opportunities appearing across many different markets. For those with a passion for protecting the environment and a desire to be philanthropic in their work life, it is the perfect time to get started in an eco-friendly Career. Discover some of the most rewarding roles that have the environment at their heart.

Heating Engineer

Part of the UK’s plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 is a full-blown restructuring of home heating systems. In fact, traditional gas boilers cannot be installed in any new build houses from 2025 onwards, and the UK is offering grants to homeowners who decide to upgrade their heating system to a low-carbon option. New technologies like air source heat pumps and solar panels are central to this plan, but there is a severe shortage of people who have the skills to fit these systems. Learning about green energy engineering such as solar panel installation promises to be a steady high-earner for anyone with a penchant for plumbing and puzzles.

Conservationist

As we see how much damage has been done to the natural world following the industrial revolution, there is an urgent need to repair and restore the environment wherever we can. Conservationists – people who act for the protection and preservation of wildlife – are playing a vital role in this work. Examples of conservationist careers include running reforesting and rewilding projects, promoting the cleaning of rivers and beaches, and more recently developing agricultural methods to offset carbon emissions.

Sustainability Manager

All companies impact on the environment in some way, no matter which market they operate in. Businesses who have promised to be more green are hiring sustainability managers to assess how eco-friendly their current practices are and to help create new products and processes that are in-line with their environmental goals. Sustainability managers can be contracted for a short period of time or sit within the company as eco-conscious champions. The advantage of this career is that it applies to all industries and all sectors from public to private. You can utilise your key skills while doing your bit to protect the world we love.

There are many routes to take if you are looking to develop an eco-friendly career, from highly paid jobs to voluntary roles in non-profit organisations devoted to the preservation of the environment. Whatever your interests, skills, and salary requirements, you are sure to find a role to suit you.
