Finding Balance as Mum and Entrepreneur

Finding Balance as Mum and Entrepreneur

The to do's list as a mum is unlimited, the to do's list as an online Entrepreneur is unlimited. Now, you put both of them together and you end up really really busy to the point that you are beyond feeling exhausted.

Everybody now talks about Finding Balance in your life, making sure that you always take care of yourself, family and friends as well as work. Yet we all know as well that everything is easier said than done in particular when we aim to have a balanced life.

As I have found the past year after leaving my corporate job, with a baby and starting a business maintaining balance is not easy, yet I have found that it is possible following five key elements.

Five Easy to Follow Ways to Find More Balance on Your Day

1. A morning routine and organisation are key to have a good day when you work from home with kids

I have been following what a lot of successful entrepreneurs do and I found that is really interesting how they all seem to have a similar routine. They usually start the day hydrating themselves, meditating, organising their day and doing the one most important thing that will produce results. What I found that is even more important is trying to keep the same routine (as much as a kid and a baby allow), staying organised and focused. Once the morning is over, I find that the day has different turns and twists, so I'm more flexible on how I respond to clients, managing social media accounts, cooking and so on. But that's ok because at least I achieved the most important objective of the day and I was at my 100% doing it, so the quality of my work is also better.

2. Being present during those short moments

I should have mentioned that as much as I try to keep my morning routine, my five-year-old or seven-month-old don't really understand about it, so I only manage around them. Having said that, if they require my attention I do my best to be there for them 100%. For me being present in the moments that I have with them means that they see that I care, giving them the attention they need, and I also avoid accidents. We like to say that as women we are multi-taskers but doing 100 things at the same time means that whatever we do lack the quality of our attention. Therefore being present is one of the most important areas of my life where I aim not to compromise either as mum or an entrepreneur.

3. Tools, tools and more tools

The day has only 24 hours, for you, for any mum, for me and for any successful entrepreneur. To make the most of those 24 hours, it is extremely important organised. Luckily for us, there are so many tools that now help us to achieve that. Tools that can help you keep track of your goals for the year, to day to day activity, to meetings, to kid's activities. From apps to the traditional agenda, there is simply no excuse on how to be organised. My favourite apps include Priority Tasks, Trello, Evernote, Slack and Basecamp. All of these I use them between work and personal areas. However, making sure that I always book some time for myself not only helps me stay balance but keep my sanity!

4. Upskilling continuously

As I have been learning to work independently and being my own boss, I also can't forget that I need to stay up to date with the latest trends on online business, social media and in general digital marketing. I not only owe this to my clients, partners and students but also to myself. Having the right digital education has only helped me to save time (making fewer mistakes), save money (as I actually get more return from investing in what I learn by immediately applying it) and grow relationships with like-minded mums and online entrepreneurs that are going through the same journey. We all have the same questions and having a community is not only about learning new things but also getting the right support (in particular when things don't go as you want them to be, which will happen as mum and entrepreneur).

5. Working on my mindset

When I was working in a corporate environment, it was always important to have a growth Mindset. However, when I moved to entrepreneurship and added a baby to my family, I understood the importance of working on my mindset on a daily basis. I have always been resilient, I have always had a growth mindset yet maintaining these when new challenges come up with a new online business, and a baby has been a challenge. I must admit that for a period of time I forgot about that yet this is probably the most important activity to work on. The right mindset, the right attitude will attract what you want. I truly believe in the Law of Attraction and the moment that I forgot about this I only attracted negativity to my life. Now, this is the first thing I work on every morning. Having a mindset that concentrates on providing more value to the world will only bring back positive things. Now I know that.

If I have shared these learnings is because I want other mums and entrepreneurs to avoid going through challenges that I faced in difficult times.
