Another Black Mirror kind of innovation, Alterego,  emerges on the planet that excites tons of tech-buffs and freaks out some of us.

The device works through subvocalization or the practice of saying words in your head. We usually do subvocalization when we are reading. Experts in technology are now using this practice when interacting with computers and gadgets. Mit Researchers created a device called, AlterEgo, which you can wear on your head that uses neuromuscular signals to function.

The gadget looks like a weird medical device strapped to a person’s face. It uses a system equipped with electrodes that detect signals when we talk in our heads.

AlterEgo also has earphones that conduct Vibrations of the bones. The vibrations happen when we subvocalize. These vibrations are delivered to the bones of the inner ears without going into the ear canal.

So far, MIT researchers use the system for fun activities like controlling Roku, for checking the time, and for reporting the opponent’s moves in a computer chess match to come up with the best counter.

Although the device seems like a weird-looking gadget, it’s easy to assume its possible progress in the future, appearance- and use-wise. AlterEgo can be developed into a smaller device and can be integrated into upcoming mobile devices.

The system can also expand its functionality and applications in the coming years. No doubt, AlterEgo is a ground-breaking innovation that can change the world that we have today.

“The motivation for this was to build an IA device — an intelligence-augmentation device,” according to Arnav Kapur, MIT grad student and lead author, in an interview.

“Our idea was: Could we have a computing platform that’s more internal, that melds human and machine in some ways and that feels like an internal extension of our own cognition?”, Kapur added.
