How Restaurant Managers/Team Leads Can Run an Effective Service

A leader is one who sees more than others see, who sees farther than others see and who sees before others see.” – Leroy Eimes, author and leadership expert

Whether you’re a manager or team leader, you are passionate, social, responsible, inventive, and a big multi-tasker. Managers and team leaders delegate and take care of their team. In the restaurant industry, they are one of many figures that help turn a moderate service into a great one. But what must be done to keep everyone pulling through the service and even after the service is done? As a manager or team lead, you have a crew helping perform the day-to-day duties that keep your establishment running smoothly. Having an understanding for your crew and yourself is important. Keep your services goal-reaching by executing the following:
Keep Emotions in Mind

This is for both you and your team’s benefit at the end of the day. How you feel is how your team will feel. If you’re stressed, they’ll be stressed. Now, if you’re asking yourself “How can I possibly remain calm during a busy service and things are going wrong?” An easy trick is to step back and look at the things that are going smoothly. We’re so easily distracted by what’s not happening versus what has been goal-reaching. If need be, gather your team for a brief run-through about what you’re aiming to get done. But most importantly, exude confidence; your team will feel it in return.

Self-Care

At the end of the day, we’re all human; trying to do our best at our jobs. Some days will be more stressful than others and we need to remind ourselves that it’s okay to take some time to block all the noise out. It’s important as a manager or leader to remind your crew about this. One in every four people will go through some kind of mental health issue each year; it’s a big statistic that cannot go unnoticed. Luckily, there are many hobbies, activities and simple practices a person can do to unwind or keep on top of their busy schedule. Some of these practices include:

  • Reading and/or writing
  • Exercise (cardio, strength training, Pilates, yoga, etc.)
  • Meditation
  • Listening to music
  • Create a vision board for your future
  • Cooking a healthy and delicious meal
  • Going for a walk
  • Talking to a trusted source

Encouraging self-care for your team is also very welcomed. Remind them that they are not just a number at your restaurant; their emotions matter.

Establish Respect

It has to be given for it to be earned, right? There are a few strategies you can use if you want to keep your restaurant turnover rate very low. Asking instead of giving a direct order makes all the difference. As a manager or team leader, your job isn’t to bark out orders; you should be the example for your crew. Trust your team with their responsibilities by training them, which defines each team member’s role. Have them recognize the duties of their job and lead by actually showing versus telling. When a team member succeeds or goes above and beyond, acknowledge them and encourage them to keep up the great work. Team spirit isn’t just for high school pep rallies; it goes for a lot of workplaces and industries.

Celebrate Your Successes

Once again, this ties into looking at the things that are going smoothly versus what went wrong. Providing excellent service, reaching or going above a sales goal, or receiving a compliment are just a few examples of things that you and your team can celebrate. Celebrating success stories can also help other members of your team adapt to similar situations in the future so that they can be executed or solved. However, while you might have had a great service, there are always things that have room for improvement. Being a manager or team leader, it’s important to identify these areas with your crew and come up with strategies to overcome any obstacles.
