Ladies and Gentlemen, feast your eyes on square watermelons! A one of a kind variation of our favourite watery summer fruit.
After looking at this, we are sure you must be wondering as to what kind of sorcery is this. Well, relax. Because we have got you covered about this cool looking variety in this article.
For the starters, these innovative melons are creation of Japanese farmers. While these may look genetically modified to you, they are actually not. They are produced just as our normal melons, albeit with a small variation in cultivating method. Oh, and there is no rocket science behind this process. Because it is relatively simple to grow them in a farm. Let’s see how.
How they grow square watermelons?
While the watermelon is small in size, farmers put it in a strong square box. They then let it grow bigger. Upon growing, the melon automatically takes the cubic shape of a box.
At this point, it is worth noting that the square box is of a glass material. This is important because it ensures that the melons have proper exposure to sunlight.

But why square watermelons?
Many Japanese households have smaller refrigerators. Due to their stackable nature, these square watermelons takes lesser space than their spherical counterparts. This also helps in transportation since more melons can be transported at once. These melons are easier to cut as well.
Apart from these square watermelons, Japanese has also grown melons in different shapes such as heart, pyramid, calabash and even human face! These differently shaped watermelons are rather expensive, with some of them costing as high as $860. Well, that’s lot of price to pay for an extra little space.
However, these watermelons are inedible because they are harvested before they are ripe. But Japanese often gives them as gifts during special occasions.
