Review Math Through Prime Climb

Ouch! Yes that is what my brain is saying. I have said it before, but I am not good at Math. Not wanting my girls to follow my footsteps, I am always looking for new games to make math fun. Prime Climb is a fun game that incorporates all of the basic math skills into one fun game.

Playing Prime Climb

Using numbers from 1-101, Prime Climb is a game that uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

After choosing a color, your goal is to get both pegs from 0-101. While it may seem logical to use multiplication and then addition, keep in mind you have the ability to knock off another player. If your goal is offense, and there is a player in the lead, you might not want to move as fast.

As you are rolling the dice and using math to move along, if you land on a prime number, the game takes a twist. You have to draw one of the cards possibly creating a drastic change to the game or even your strategies.

Prime Climb Variations

If your kids know all of the basic math properties, you are fine, but if you are looking for a fun twist, here are other suggestions based on age level.

Addition: Rolling only one die, take turns adding the number for example if your child is on number 52 and rolls the number 3, he will have to mentally tell you the number 55.

Subtraction: Start at 101. Using only one die, keep on rolling and subtracting the numbers until you reach 0. For example if your child is on number 47 and he rolls a 5 he will have to go to the number 42.

Tips: Make it a rule that all math has to be solved mentally or using fingers. If the child counts the spaces between number, he looses a turn. Using the same concepts, you can use the above for multiplication and division.

Prime Climb is an amazing math review game. I feel it is one of those games that can be altered for any level of mathematics. I will be playing this game with my girls as well as in the second grade classroom I work in. Any game that brings a love of math is worth it in my book.

I received Prime Climb in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine and were in no way influenced by outside sources.
