The Golden Spike was a very fascinating time in our history. It was a time when the north and the south would be united for the first time in history.
At the Driving of the Golden Spike Book Review
The Cullen family migrated for Ireland to find themselves out of work. The American dream had not turned out the way they planned, and life was hard. Moving from one job to the next, Mike, Sheamus’s son came across a job, to help build a major railroad, one that will change history.
Sheamus accepts the job, but this son insists on coming along. Not wanting to separate the family, Nora, Mrs. Cullen and Feena, their daughter will only accept f they can come along as well.
Keeping the family together, the group set out to work on the rails. This book focuses mostly on the building and behind the scenes of the golden spike itself.
This book is a pretty heavy book. There is lots of information about the Golden Spike. I understand that there needs to be a lot of changes between characters and settings, but for the kids, not all of them flowed well. I found them to be a little bit choppy.
My Overall Opinion
The Driving of the Golden Spike is a pretty good book. Instead of teaching children all about the Golden Spike, they get to follow the journey of Mike and Feena. By sharing how kids got along during this time period, they will have a whole new perspective of this amazing connection in history.
