When classes begin at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business this fall, there will be nine new Faculty Members on campus.

In an announcement this week, the school introduced the professors who will join Darden for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Two of the new Faculty members are in Darden’s Communication department.

Tatiana Batova specializes in people’s interactions with technologies while Allison Elias, who comes to Darden from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, focuses on gender, diversity, careers and social mobility.

Also interested in issues related to diversity is Melissa Thomas-Hunt, who will be the John D. Forbes Distinguished Professor of Business Administration. She was previously the global head of diversity and belonging at Airbnb and will act as a special adviser in that area at Darden.

Gabe Adams joins Darden’s Leadership and Organizational Behavior department alongside a joint appointment at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. Her research examines interpersonal issues and conflict resolution, such as in the workplace.

Young Hou, who has done work on competition and nonmarket strategy, joins the Strategy department. He was formerly a bond trader and recently was awarded a PhD from Harvard Business School.

New to the Technology and Operations Management department is Dwai Roy. He has focused on relationships between government agencies and small businesses.

Rustam Abuzov, meanwhile, studies venture capital and financing of startups, an interest he will bring to Darden’s Finance department.

Finally, two new faculty members will become professors of practice.

Carolyn Miles, an alum from Darden’s MBA Class of 1988 and previously CEO of Save the Children, was named one of Fortune’s Top 50 global leaders in 2015 and has extensive experience in the social and non-profit sector. She will additionally act as a special adviser to the dean.

And Veronica Warnock is an economist who has worked on topics such as housing financing and development. Through her consulting work, she has been involved with organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.

The slate of new faculty talent that Darden is welcoming this year highlights one of the advantages top B-schools offer: their inspiring and experienced professors.

That faculty is part of the reason elite MBA programs are so competitive, of course. If you’re wondering how your application stacks up at schools like Darden, we’re happy to help you figure that out.
