Wharton Business School 2019-2020 MBA Essay Tips and Application Deadlines

The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business has put forth only two essay questions for their 2019-2020 application year. The questions themselves remain unchanged from previous years, indicating that the admissions committee has been happy with both the caliber and the nature of the admission essays they have received.

Deadlines for the class of 2022 are:

  • Round one: September 17, 2019
  • Round two: January 7, 2020
  • Round three: April 1, 2020

The first Wharton essay prompt is:

“What do you hope to gain professionally from the Wharton MBA? (500 words)

Want to ace your Wharton admissions essay? It’s time to get specific. Dive into the nitty-gritty details of your personal journey and professional goals.

Everyone who applies to Wharton wants to be admitted because of the school’s prestigious reputation, because they want to gain leadership skills, because they want to advance their career. What sets you apart?

What the admissions committee is looking for with this essay prompt is an understanding of why attending Wharton is integral to achieving your professional goals. It’s all about your personal brand, and how that meshes with what the school offers.

What skills, knowledge, or connections do you want to develop in your time at the school? What classes do you want to take? What professors do you want to learn from? What groups do you want to join? And most of all, how will you act on your experiences to achieve your goals?

Everyone who applies wants to go to Wharton. If you want to get admitted, you need to show the adcom why you need to attend – and what you’ll take away from your time at the school.

Writing the Second 2019-2020 Wharton Application Essay

The prompt reads:

“Describe an impactful experience or accomplishment that is not reflected elsewhere in your application. How will you use what you learned through that experience to contribute to the Wharton community? (400 words)

While the first admissions essay focuses on what applicants will take from their time at Wharton, the second delves into what applicants will bring to the school.

Community is a big part of the picture for most elite MBA programs. Adcoms aren’t just deciding which applicants are “good enough” to attend. In reality, the vast majority of applicants are highly qualified, incredibly motivated professionals.

Most business school graduates view the development of an alumni network as one of the most valuable things they take away from their time in b-school. As a result, adcoms at top-ranked MBA programs strive to do is to build a cohort of students who will bring diverse experiences and knowledge sets to the classroom, as well as to the student clubs and study groups on campus.

Wharton’s second application essay prompt asks candidates to essentially “sell” their experience. Again, a clear understanding of your personal brand, and how it sets you apart, is crucial to doing well on this essay.

As you brainstorm possible experiences to write about, keep in mind what the prompt is actually looking for: not your proudest moment or biggest achievement, but your most “impactful” achievement or experience.

If an experience has an impact on you, it means that it has somehow changed you. That might mean it changed how you view the world, how you approach problems, how you work with people, what you prioritize in life.

Business school can be a time of extreme stress in a person’s life – not just because of the workload and the desire to do well, but because it requires you to be open to new ideas and experiences, and to grow from them.

Acing the second Wharton MBA essay requires you to think seriously about experiences that have changed you, and show how those changes will make you an asset to the 2022 MBA cohort.
