Earthing PPT and PDF Report For ECE

Earthing PPT and PDF Report For ECE: To connect the bimetallic (conductive) elements of an electrical appliance or installations to the planet (ground) is termed Earthing or Grounding. In different words, to attach the bimetal elements of electrical machinery and devices to the earth plate or earth conductor (which is buried within the wet earth) through a thick conductor wire (which has terribly low resistance) for safety purpose is understood as Earthing or grounding.

Importance of Grounding:

The primary purpose of grounding is to avoid or minimize the danger of electrocution, fireplace as a result of earth outflow of current through an unwanted path and to make sure that the potential of a current carrying conductor doesn’t rise with reference to the world than its designed insulation. Once the metallic part of electrical appliances (parts which will conduct or permit passage of electrical current) comes connected with a live wire, perhaps as a result of the failure of installations or failure in cable insulation, the metal becomes charged and static charge accumulates on that. If someone touches such a charged metal, the result’s a severe shock. To avoid such instances, the facility provides systems and elements of appliances got to be earthed therefore on transfer the charge on to the world.

Basic requirements of Earthing:

  • To protect human lives yet as give safety to electrical devices and appliances from outpouring current.
  • To keep voltage as a constant within the healthy section (If the fault happens in any phase).
  • To protect electrical system and buildings form lighting.
  • To function as a return conductor in electrical traction system and communication.
  • To avoid the danger of fireside in electrical installation systems.

Distinct terms used in Earthing:

Distinct terms used in electrical earthing are showed with the help of a diagram:

Fig1: Distinct terms used in Earthing

  1. Earth: The proper connection between electrical installation systems through a conductor to the buried plate within the earth is understood as Earth.
  2. Earthed: When a device, appliance or wiring system connected to the world through earth conductor, it’s referred to as an earthed device or straightforward “Earthed”.
  3. Solidly earthed: When an electrical device, appliance or electrical installation is connected to the planet conductor without a fuse, breaker or resistance/Impedance, it’s known as “solidly earthed”.
  4. Earth electrode: When a conductor (or conductive plate) buried within the earth for an electrical grounding system. It’s familiar to be Earth conductor. Earth electrodes are in several shapes like a semiconductive plate, semiconductive rod, metal water pipe or the other conductor with low resistance.
  5. Earthing lead: The conductor wire or conductive strip connected between Earth conductor and Electrical installation system and devices is known as grounding lead.
  6. Earth continuity conductor: The conductor wire that is connected to completely different electrical devices and appliances like, distribution board, completely different plugs, and appliances etc. is known as earth continuity conductor.
  7. Sub main earthing conductor: A wire connected between distribution board and switch board i.e. that conductor is expounded to sub main circuits.
  8. Earth resistance: This is the entire resistance between earth conductor and earth in Ω (Ohms). Earth resistance is that the algebraic total of the resistances of earth continuity conductor, grounding lead, earth electrode, and earth.

Components of the Earthing system:

A total electrical earthing system has the following components:

  • Earth continuity conductor
  • Earthing lead
  • Earth electrode

Types of earthing:

Earthing can be done in many ways and they are mentioned below:

  • Plate earthing
  • Pipe earthing
  • Rod earthing
  • Earthing through the waterman
  • Strip or wire earthing

Dangers of not earthing a system:

Few of the dangers are mentioned below:

  • To avoid electrical shock
  • To avoid risk of fireside as a result of earth outpouring current through unwanted path and
  • To ensure that no current-carrying conductor rises to a possible with regard to the general mass of earth than its designed insulation.

However, if excessive current isn’t earthed, appliances are going to be broken without the assistance of fuse in place. You must note that excessive current is earthed at their generating stations that are why earth wires carry little or no current in any respect. It thus implies that it’s not necessary to earth any of the wires (live, earth and neutral wires) contained in an exceedingly PVC. Grounding the live wire is harmful.
