On this women’s day, while we acknowledge all the powerful, influential and level-headed Women around us, let’s not forget to recognize those who have contributed to Mathematics-  A Man’s land!!

History says mathematics as a field of science or philosophy was quite a close-knit-Men business as on before the twentieth century.

Eventually, women found their way in by the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century and contributed a lot to very few people’s knowledge!

Amalie Emmy Noether

So, next time you think that you have only “  father” of Algebra, remember Miss Noether is laughing at you from up above!!

Florence Nightingale:

It is indeed sad we know her as the lady with the lamp “ A compassionate Nurse” than a Woman who contributed to Math, to improve health and sanitation! She wasn’t a mere nurse, but someone who made a comprehensive statistical study of sanitation in Indian rural life and was the leading figure in the introduction of improved medical care and public health service in India.

Dame Mary Lucy Cartwright

Now, I am not a huge fan of any of those fancy math term, but this sure hell sounds like something huge that we have missed out on for ages.

It is ironical that most of us have no clue of her existence, when she was the first woman to achieve a first class on the Oxford Finals, one of the first women to be elected to the Royal Society, the first woman to sit on its Council, and the first woman to receive its Sylvester Medal (1964)—for her “distinguished contributions to analysis and the theory of functions of a real and complex variable.”

Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace is Genius AF!! I was so ashamed that I know Lord Byron but not her!! It took a while to sink in!

The Final Takeaway:

It’s awful that the most common factor that binds these women is their work that remained unrecognized for the most part of the world! I mean, why just Pythagoras theorem, why not Noether theorem! Women are making breakthroughs in all corners of the world, but Maths!! It’s time to look back at legacy these women have left for us, appreciate it and try to break the barrier of ” Women and Math, meh”!
