Social Well-Being As An Online Student

One of the first concerns many parents have when exploring the idea of enrolling their child in online education is “How will going to School online effect my child’s socialization?”. Offering the ability for your child to participate in social opportunities is an incredibly important factor to consider, and it is not one that CalPac has ignored.

The ability to serve all students is something we pride ourselves on. In over 10 plus years of educating in an online space, we have come to learn that many brick and mortar socialization opportunities simply do not fit the needs of each and every child. We have gone to great lengths to create opportunities for connection, both virtually and in person, so that our student body is able to build community with their peers and their teachers in a way that works for them.

There are many components to feeling well and happy, one of those components is having a sense of support outside of yourself. We understand that students, both in traditional and online school, may sometimes feel isolated. For those struggling with those feelings, consider some of the following tips to ensure your social well-being by taking advantage of opportunities for socialization that CalPac provides:

Socialization at CalPac

Join a School Club
CalPac offers several student-run clubs that focus on different areas of interest ranging from arts and crafts and video gaming to the anti-bullying club and the photography club. Clubs and student groups enable our online students to pursue their interests while making friends with their peers. Clubs are a great way to meet students outside of your grade level and classes and having a common interest with other students is a great way to establish an immediate connection. Students are also given the opportunity to take on leadership roles within school sponsored clubs which an incredible skill building exercise. For more information on what clubs look like at an online school, read our recent article exploring the idea of online clubs for online kids.

Attend Your Live Sessions

Live sessions are mandatory for non-Credit Recovery students. While they are important for your students overall grade, they also allow them to interact with their peers on a weekly basis. Regularly attending live sessions creates a sense of normalcy and camaraderie among students. Just as you would make friends in your classes at a brick and mortar, you will also develop friendships with your classmates as you attend your live session each week. 2022 class speaker Annaleise Godoy spoke to us about the community she was able to create at CalPac – hear about her experience below!

Check out a CalPac Sponsored Field Trip
Although we are a fully online school, CalPac offers many in-person field trips throughout the year that are hosted by our teachers and staff! These field trips are sometimes educational and sometimes JUST FOR FUN! We understand the importance of students simply getting together with their peers and enjoying a day together. Student’s can make friends in their live sessions and clubs and have the opportunity to meet up with them at school field trips! We also facilitate a handful of virtual field trips as well, that way if your child is unable to attend an in-person event, they still have the other opportunities available to them. Take a look at a recent Whale Watching field trip hosted by CalPac below!

Attend CalPac’s Wednesday Social Hour!
Every Wednesday at noon, we host a social hour over zoom for students to get together and simply hang out. Sometimes there will be guest speakers, special presentations, or just an opportunity for students to free chat and get to know each other.

Socialization outside of CalPac

Take Your School Work Somewhere New
The beauty of going to school online is that student’s aren’t confined to the four walls of a brick and mortar school. Students can switch up their routine and try doing their school work from their local library or coffee shop. Additionally, the flexibility CalPac offers means that students are able to go on trips with their families without missing out on any schooling! As long as they are able to complete their weekly coursework and attend any mandatory sessions, they can experience new places and people while on a family vacation

Participate in Extracurriculars
Another perk of the flexibility of virtual schooling is that students are able to actively pursue the passions they may have outside of the academic sphere. CalPac’s alumni listed has included many professional athletes, musicians, and actors – students with big dreams who want the opportunity to chase them. Participating in extracurriculars like these are incredible for a child’s social well-being. CalPac will be with your student every step of the way to ensure that they are able to obtain a great education while continuing to pursue the things they love.
