A recent report reveals that India has surpassed Japan to become the third largest internet user in the world, leading the charts is China followed by the United States.
Most of the Indian Internet Users are significantly younger than those of other emerging economies. The report by comScore suggests that Indian has beaten Japan to be the world number 3 in terms of largest internet users in a country.
Currently, India has around 74 million internet userswitnessing an increase of 31 per cent over March 2012.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) projected the number of Internet subscribers in India at 164.81 million as of March 31, 2013. It also said that seven out of eight access the Internet from their mobile phones.
However, the report by comScore has put mobile and tablet-based internet users at only 14% of the total.
“Mobile phone based Internet usage is a key component of Indian Internet usage, and I’d say the recent growth is being driven by mobile Internet usage,” Nilotpal Chakravarti, said the spokesperson of the Internet and Mobile Association of India.
Interestingly, three-fourths of Indian Internet Users are below the age of 35, which are considerably young. India's improvemnt in the literacy rate is considered being one of the reasons behind it.
The quarter of time is spend on social media and on mails it accounts for 23 percent of the total.
The report also revealed that women account for less than 40 percent of the total Indian internet users, a far low sex ratio than other countries.
Google sites have the highest unique visitors, Net users spend most of their time on Facebook. Facebook is the second place in terms of unique visitors.
Yahoo, Microsoft and Wikimedia sites follow in unique visitor numbers.
Among social media sites, Linkedin and Twitter are the next most popular.
China is leading the chart with the highest number of internet users. Its internet users outnumber Indians by a ratio of 5:1.
