Training and Development is such an important aspect to any Business; mainly because there still is a need to learn even once the degree is obtained. The world continues to develop at an astonishing rate, so it’s only natural that our own knowledge become outdated and need a refresher over time. The field of Training and Development should also look at itself in order to update itself with the times as well.
So what can be done about all this? Obviously T&D has become more prominent in companies throughout the years, but this blog poster doesn’t think it’s enough, especially when business is continually developing at an alarming rate. Education is a necessity for any company; it’s why the top talent from the best universities is so highly coveted. What you know matters. But even those great educations become outdated once new methodologies and ideas come out. Here three topics that T&D can focus on to stay up to date.
First is globalization. While this topic is being covered in most schools and business programs; the topic doesn’t truly become relatable until you’re in a position to see it firs- hand. What a proper training in globalization can do is educate your employees on how it fits into your business, but also allow for a conversation to start about how it can be improved or expanded upon. The best ideas are often tucked away in the minds of employees until there is a need to bring them up. Give them an opportunity to share their thoughts and your business will flourish because of it.
Another major area to focus on is new trends within your industry. While some of these are pronounced when you’re a manager or and executive, the average employee might miss these things entirely because they don’t know what to look for. Having a session that focuses on aspects of the business they might be missing could lead to a better work ethic from those employees, in addition to the ideas that will most definitely come from them.
Finally the last training that can be done for your business is a simple one. With the growth of the world we have also seen a growth in social constructs as well, such as LGBTQ rights, gender equality, and other new societal norms. New ideas and ways of thinking have come out on how we can view one another as people. It’s important to remember that your employees need to feel comfortable to do their best work. How can a transgender employee feel comfortable in his/her work environment if he/she is unsure where the company stands on his/her way of life. Educating everyone on what it means to be a member of society might seem frivolous, but in the end it will pay off, because training and development is ultimately a reflection of your company.
So what have you learned? In today’s world education becomes outdated fast, and there is a need to continue ones education in the workplace, in order to see the workplace put out its best work. Training and development is a great tool to expand employee’s knowledge and give them an opportunity to be a voice in the company.
