International Current Affairs
  • Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan today participated in the 32nd Commonwealth Health Ministers’ Meeting through Video Conference. 
    • The Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM) will provide member countries with an opportunity to share their experiences and lessons, as well as build consensus around collective action to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Commonwealth.
    • Theme of 32nd Commonwealth Health Ministers’ Meeting : Delivering a co-ordinated Commonwealth COVID-19 response.
National Current Affairs
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today announced that the total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 78,003 from yesterday's 74,281 cases. 
    • 134 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 2,549. 
    • Out of the total cases, 49,219 cases are active, while 26,234 patients have been cured/discharged.
  • The Supreme Court today exempted lawyers appearing in virtual hearings from wearing black coats and robes, in view of medical advice stating that there is a greater possibility of COVID-19 spread through this attire. 
    • It stated that advocates "may wear plain white shirt/ white salwar kameez/ white saree with a plain white neck band...till medical exigencies exist".
  • To salute the coronavirus frontline warriors, Delhi Police is organising 'Dil Se Shukriya' virtual concert today from 7 PM onwards. 
    • It will feature a special address from Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal, Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava and AIIMS Director Doctor Randeep Guleria.
    • The concert will also feature various artists including Kailash Kher, Shankar Mahadevan and Usha Uthup.
  • To help in contact tracing if required later, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started taking the destination address of all passengers booking tickets online. 
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today announced that the government is looking at changing the definition of inter-state migrant workers. 
    • She said that the definition will include migrant workers employed directly by the employer, workers directly coming to destination state of their own besides the migrant workers employed through a contractor.
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and 8 others were today elected unopposed to the State Legislative Council. 
    • Heading the Maha Vikas Aghadi consisting of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, Thackeray was sworn-in as Maharashtra's Chief Minister on November 28 last year. 
    • He had six months to get elected to either of the House of the state legislature.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has banned all transfer of officers and employees in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. 
    • Transfers due to unavoidable situation could be effected with the CM's prior approval. 
Science & Technology
  • Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan today visited the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and dedicated the COBAS 6800 testing machine to the nation.
    • This is the 1st such testing machine that has been procured by the Government for testing of COVID-19 cases and is installed at the National Centre for Disease Control.
    • COBAS 6800 is a sophisticated machine enabled with robotics that minimizes the chance of contamination as well as the risk of infection to the health care workers since it can be operated remotely with limited human intervention.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today gave details about the second tranche of relief measures under the Aatma-Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. Here are major highlights :
    • 'One Nation One Ration Card' will be implemented, which will benefit 67 crore people in 23 states covering 83% of the PDS population by August 2020. '
      • One Nation One Ration Card' refers to national portability of ration card where a beneficiary can access ration from any shop in any state with one card.
    • Migrants who are neither NFSA or State Card beneficiaries in the state they are stationed will be provided 5-kg grains/person and 1-kg chana/family/month for free for next 2 months. 
      • About 8 crore migrants are expected to benefit from it. She further said Centre will spend ₹3,500 crore on this.
    • Prompt payees of MUDRA-Shishu loans of up to ₹50,000 will receive an interest subvention of 2% for a period of 12 months. 
      • This will be applicable after the three-month moratorium granted by the RBI ends. 
      • This will result in a relief of ₹1,500 crore to MUDRA-Shishu loanees, the FM added.
    • 12,000 self-help groups have jointly produced 3 crore masks and 1.20 lakh litres of sanitiser. 
    • As many as 63 lakh loans worth ₹86,600 crore were approved in agriculture sector between March 1 and April 30 this year.
      • Support of ₹4,200 crore was provided under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund to states during March 2020 for rural infrastructure.
