  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached Bhutan for his 1st bilateral visit after assuming office. 
    • During this visit, India and Bhutan will discuss the entire gamut of bilateral relations, including the upcoming high-level exchanges, economic development and hydro-power cooperation.
  • India was ranked 95th in the 1st-ever SDG Gender Index.
    • The index report titled, ‘Harnessing the Power of Data for Gender Equality: Introducing the 2019 EM2030 SDG Gender Index,’ examines the state of gender equality across 129 countries. 
    • The index, which measures progress made in achieving gender commitments against internationally set targets, was developed by Equal Measures 2030, a partnership effort of regional and global organisations.

National Current Affairs
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S​ Jagan Mohan Reddy today announced that he is going to appoint 5 Deputy Chief Ministers under him, one each from SC, ST, BC, minority and Kapu communities.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the reconstitution of government think-tank NITI Aayog
    • Rajiv Kumar has been retained as the Vice Chairman while full-time members include
      VK Saraswat, Ramesh Chand and VK Paul. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will be the ex-officio members.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Indian multinational, public sector banking and financial services company Bank of Baroda has named businessman Vijay Kalantri (Chairman and Managing Director of Dighi Port), as a "wilful defaulter" along with his son Vishal Kalantri
    • They owe more than ₹3,000 crore to a consortium of 16 banks, for loans given to develop the port. 
    • A bankruptcy court last month approved JNPT's resolution plan to buy Dighi Port for ₹853 crore.
  • India's Ambassador to China Vikram Misri today said that the trade between India and China is set to cross the $100-billion mark in 2019 for the first time.
  • Shops in Tamil Nadu will be allowed to stay open 24x7 on all days initially for a period of 3 years, as per the notification in Tamil Nadu Government Gazette. 
    • The precondition of the order involves employers ensuring safety of women employees, including constitution of Internal Complaints Committee. 
    • It also mandates transport arrangements for women who work in night shifts.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised its GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7% from the earlier projection of 7.2%.
Science & Technology
  • The International Astronomical Union (IAU), the governing body that manages names of astronomical objects, has invited every country in the world to name a planet outside the Solar System and its star
    • About 100 countries have signed up to run public voting competitions to select popular name for their stars and planets. 
    • Note : The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is going to celebrate its 100th anniversary in July 2019.
Deaths
  • 6-time Grammy-winning musician Malcolm John Rebennack (77) passed away.
    • He is famously known as Dr John.
    • He started his career as a pianist in the 1950s and gained popularity following the release of his first album in 1968.
Awards & Honors
  • American novelist Tayari Jones £30,000 worth Women’s Prize for Fiction 2019 for her 4th novel titled “An American Marriage“. 
    • The book is about the wrongful conviction of a young black American man has won the the 2019 Women's Prize for Fiction.
    • The book was described by former US President Barack Obama as a "moving portrayal of the effects of a wrongful conviction on a young African-American couple".
Sports Current Affairs
  • Australia's Female Professional Football Players will be given the same base pay as men in a one-year extension to a collective bargaining agreement. 
    • Players in Australia's W-League will have their annual minimum remuneration hiked 33% to AUD 16,344 ($11,400), with their base hourly rate matching the rates given in the men's A-League.
