R23.1 million in the bank

José Riveiro‘S Orlando Pirates won no fewer than two prizes last season. Let’s take a look back at the money earned.

ORLANDO PIRATES’ TWO TROPHIES AND DSTV PREMIERSHIP POSITION

The Soweto giants started the season by taking the first available trophy. The MTN8played in the early season between August and September, was won by Orlando Pirates. Sipho Chaine was the hero as the Bloemfontein-born star goalkeeper saved three penalties in the final against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Next up was the Carling Knockout. Orlando Pirates managed to win their last sixteen games, before losing in the last eight on penalties against Richards Bay.

The Buccaneers finally lifted another trophy in June. It was another battle against Sundowns in a final since the MTN8 date. Orlando Pirates emerged victorious 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final in Mbombela. Sipho Chaine saved a penalty from Lucas Ribeiro in regular time. Themba Zwan’s opening goal was later canceled out by a Patrick Maswanganyi goal before Relebohile Mofokeng’s last-minute winner.

Finally, second place in the DStv Premiership meant Orlando Pirates earned the second highest prize money behind champions Sundowns.

PRIZE MONEY DISTRIBUTION

  • MTN 8: R8 million
  • Carling Knockout Quarter-final: R600,000
  • Nedbank Cup: R7 million
  • DStv Premiership runner-up: R7.5 million

JOSE RIVEIRO CONFIRMS IMPROVEMENT

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates coach Riveiro addressed the media after winning the Nedbank Cup against Sundowns. In a short report, Riveiro says that the team has grown and become more mature compared to last season.

“If you ask me as a person who is involved in the group every minute and I know what we are, what you always said here: ‘cooking’. We are cooking, I think the progression, the evolution of the team, this season is superior than last season, in my opinion,” the Orlando Pirates coach said via the Sowetan.

Despite finishing with lower points this season compared to last season, Riveiro believes the football was better this season.

“That means 8/10 or 7 and a half, I don’t know, it might be our fans who will do that in the end and you judge the work we do, but me, because my position can play an important role in the group , as I said before the final of this season, in terms of football, it is better than last season,” added the Orlando Pirates meter.
