Himachal Bypoll Results: High-stakes battle between BJP and Congress for 6 seats after disqualification from MLA Post RS polls

The outcome of the Himachal Assembly elections will see a high-stakes battle between the BJP and Congress. The bypolls were conducted after six Congress MLAs were disqualified on grounds of defection after the Rajya Sabha elections in the state. These six rebel MLAs have been contesting the seats from the BJP.

On February 27, the six rebel Congress MLAs voted for the BJP’s Harsh Mahajan in the Rajya Sabha elections. Congress Party candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was defeated despite the grand old party having an outright majority in the 68-member Himachal. After the revolt of six Congress MLAs, the Congress government was threatened as the opposition BJP called for the resignation of CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu.

All six rebel Congress MLAs are in the fray again but on a BJP ticket. The six rebel leaders in the fray are Rajinder Rana, Sudhir Sharma, Devinder Kumar Bhutto, Chaitanya Sharma, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal and Ravi Thakur. CM Sukhu has claimed that they accepted “crores” for selling their integrity to BJP.

Gujarat Bypolls 2024 Results: Counting will begin at 8 am

Gujarat bypolls: Five constituencies Vijapur, Khambhat, Manavadar, Porbandar and Vaghodia voted to elect new representatives as the sitting MLAs joined the BJP.

Veteran Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia resigned from Porbandar seat and defected to the BJP. Assembly elections were held in Gujarat in December 2022. Three other legislators — Manavadar MLA Arvind Ladani, Vijapur MLA CJ Chavda and Khambhat MLA Chirag Patel — left the Congress to join the BJP.

In Vaghodia, Dharmendrasinh Vaghela, a BJP rebel who had won the 2022 elections, resigned as MLA in January to return to the party fold.

Assembly Bypoll Results in 13 States

Himachal Pradesh Bypolls: Congress leads Kutlehar, Garget, Sujanpur and Lahaul & Spiti in four seats in Himachal Pradesh. BJP is leading in Barsar, Dharamshala.

Crucial votes will be counted in six parliamentary seats, including Dharamshala, Lahaul-Spiti, Sujanpur, Barsar, Gagret and Kutlehar. The bypolls, which took place alongside the Lok Sabha elections, were necessitated following the disqualification of six Congress MLAs for disobeying the party whip. The MLAs, Sudhir Sharma, Ravi Thakur, Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Chaitanya Sharma and Devinder Kumar, had refused to obey the party’s direction to be present in the House of Representatives and vote for the Congress government during the discussion about the state budget.

Gujarat bypolls: Five Assembly constituencies voted to elect new representatives as sitting MLAs joined the BJP. These seats are Vijapur, Khambhat, Manavadar, Porbandar and Vaghodia.

Haryana bypolls: The Karnal seat, vacated by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, will see a new legislator with incumbent CM Nayab Singh Saini contesting the seat.

Bihar bypolls: A key bypoll will determine who will be the new representative from Agiaon seat, where CPI (ML) lawmaker Manoj Manji was disqualified after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case.

Uttar Pradesh bypolls: BJP MLA from Duddhi, Ram Dular, was disqualified after being convicted in a rape case. This seat will see a new lawmaker. Bypolls were also held in Gainsari, Lucknow East and Dadraul seats that fell vacant following the death of sitting MLAs Shiv Pratap Yadav (SP), Ashutosh Tandon (BJP) and Manavendra Singh (BJP) respectively.

Karnataka bypolls: Shorapur seat is in focus after the death of Congress MLA Raja Venkatappa Naik.

Rajasthan bypolls: The Bagidora seat will see a new representative due to the resignation of Congress MLA Mahendra Jeet Singh Malviya, who has joined the BJP.

Maharashtra bypolls: Akola West went to bypoll after the death of BJP MLA Govardhan Mangilal Sharma.

Tripura bypolls: The Ramnagar seat is up for grabs after the death of BJP MLA Surajit Datta.

Tamil Nadu bypolls: The Vilavancode seat will be contested after the resignation of Congress MLA S Vidyadharini.
