Challenges In STEM Education In Skill India

STEM education has gained prominence with the Make in India campaign. If we want to build from scratch we need the next generation of technological innovators, who are just not science literates but are able to extrapolate their knowledge in the real-life scenario. Solving a problem of trigonometry on paper is different, but understanding the concept and working on it outside the classroom determines the proficiency of the student in the subject.

STEM Education means becoming proficient in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and it has become relevant in the changing times, as 80 per cent of the jobs in the next decade will be requiring some sort of science and math skills.
Despite having top-quality talent, the exam-focused education model of India has always limited the students from innovation, creativity, communication, problem-solving, management and social skills.

This is when STEM can prove to be a significant step towards accelerating the development of the country with the STEM workforce.

Challenges in the implementation of STEM education

Every change is accompanied by a lot of struggles. It holds true for implementing STEM education in India. Having said that, let us highlight the different challenges that India is facing in implementing STEM education.

STEM is an incredible initiative towards the development of a country. Being the second-most populous country in the world, India still needs to do a lot in terms of STEM education. It requires strong collaboration among all the sectors of the society, be it political, social or economical to equip its future generations with the benefits of STEM education.

Provision of good infrastructure, financial resources, proper educational equipment, well-qualified teachers, advancements in the scientific field is some very important challenges that India is facing in terms of providing quality STEM education which needs to be addressed at a national level.

1. Socio-economic challenges

India is a developing country and the majority of the country's population lives in conditions that are socially and economically challenging. Under such conditions, it becomes difficult for educational institutions to create solutions on STEM which can be adapted by that vast majority of the population.

2. Infrastructure challenges

Many schools do not implement STEM labs as they don’t have the infrastructure to do so and they mistakenly believe that STEM labs are expensive. Also, there is a lack of STEM certified teachers.

YouDo has a wide range of budget-friendly STEM activities which can be easily integrated within the curriculum and do not require a hi-fi lab to implement them.

3. Technological and scientific challenges

This initiative will become successful when our schools become hubs of technological and scientific achievements. Tapping the talent has to happen at a young age when the students are in school.
Therefore training the trainer is critical. The teachers should be equipped enough to tap into the talent pool of the students who have an inclination for innovation and they should let them blossom their talent through tailor-made STEM interventions. Obviously, one size fits all curriculum is not going to work.
