The Right Way to Collect Indian notes

Understand Broad Categories:
The history of Indian notes is so vast and fascinating that it is almost impossible to start your collection unless you understand the broad categories. The earliest Currency notes in India were issued by private and semi-government banks for three different presidencies, Bombay, Bengal and Madras that were set up by the East India Company. British India notes were issued after India was officially declared as a British colony in 1857. Initially, these notes featured designs only on one side and were called as uniface notes. Hyderabad was the only Princely state that issued notes in India. Other colonial powers also issued currency notes giving rise to Indo-French and Indo-Portuguese issues. The notes that are issued after independence are called as republic India notes.

Look for Unique Serial Numbers:
There are certain collectors who look for notes of India with unique Serial Numbers. For example, notes with serial numbers that contain the same digits in every position, serial numbers in ascending or descending order, serial numbers that denote special dates etc. You will have to keep an eye on every note that comes to you and keep them safely. Some collectors also focus on inset letters, prefixes and signature of Governors who served a shorter term in office.

Never Stop Researching:
The more you read about old notes of India the more interesting facts you would discover about them. Only if you have sound knowledge, would you be able to identify rare notes of India. Experts wait for several months or even years to find a unique Indian note after doing a lot of research. If you invest more time in research, you will be able to find more interesting notes and also would be able to sell them later for a much better value.

Every collector needs to get out of his shell and attend as many events, seminars, auctions and exhibitions related to currency notes of India as possible. You can also join online and offline groups so that you get a chance to interact with experienced notaphilists. When you start building a network, you will increase your knowledge as well as chances of acquiring or selling interesting notes.
