Do you have to be 21 to Get a Hotel – The Details

Tags: hotel

If you live in the USA, then by law you don’t have to be 21 to check in a hotel. According to USA law, if your age is a minimum of 18 or over then you will be able to book a hotel room. In the USA, check-in is considered as a contract and hotels can’t enforce a contract with minors. However, there are lots of hotels available in the USA that have a minimum age requirement of 21.

Why do Many USA Hotels have an Age Limit of 21?

Though by law you are eligible to get a Hotel at the age of 18, however many USA hotels have an age restriction and you must have to be at least 21 years old to book a hotel room, but why? Well, there are quite a few valid reasons available for hotels to put a restriction on the age. Let’s check them out!

1. Avoid Higher Insurance Rate

Many hotels put a restriction on the age to avoid higher insurance rates. Usually, younger guests are reckless, immature, and irresponsible. Moreover, this type of guest might lead to accidents and damage to the hotel. So, this type of incident will increase the insurance rate for the hotels. Moreover, if you are a minor and if something happens to you then the hotel will be held responsible. This is why most hotels don’t let minors book a room.

2. Don’t want to Serve Alcohol to Minors

Almost all hotels have bars in the USA that serves alcohol to the guests. Moreover, many hotels have a mini bar in the hotel room. In the USA, you have to be at least 21 years old to become eligible to drink alcohol. Therefore, many hotels have age requirements of at least 21 years old to avoid the problem of serving alcohol to minors. This type of age requirement protects the hotel from underage drinking consequences.

3. Minors Can’t Sign a Contract

According to USA law, minors can’t sign a contract. Checking in a hotel is like signing a contract so if your age is below 18, then you can’t book a hotel. Moreover, hotels can’t enforce a contract that is signed by a minor. This is another key reason many hotels have a minimum age requirement of 21.

4. Hotels want Mature Guests

Many hotels have a “No Kid” policy and this type of hotel’s main target is to attract guests who want quiet, relaxing getaways. For example, there are many hotels available that only have honeymoon suits for couples. So, this type of hotel put age restrictions to avoid immature clientele and ensure a comfortable atmosphere for all guests.

How to Book a Hotel Room If the Age is 18 and 21?

People in the age range of 18 and 21 find it very difficult to book a hotel room for various reasons. But that doesn’t mean you can’t book a hotel room if your age is between 18 and 21. Hotels ask people of this age group to book rooms independently and bring a credit card. This is because a credit card is the most preferred payment method for hotels to book a room. If you don’t have your own credit card then you can bring your parent’s, or guardian’s credit card. If you have a student credit card then you can also use it to book a hotel room. When you use a credit card to book a hotel room, the hotel will be able to charge the bill and other fees on the card.

On the other hand, if the hotel doesn’t allow people of this age group to book a room then you can submit written permission from your parents or guardians. In this type of situation, the guardian might have to fill out the hotel’s liability form and guarantee expenses and responsibility of yours. Moreover, if you don’t have a credit card but need to book a hotel room then you have to find out a hotel that accepts cash and guest of this age group. You must have a valid photo id to prove that your age is at least 18 years or higher.
