The Future Of Gutenberg? It’s In The Cloud

Seems funny that I’m already thinking of what’s just over the horizon for Gutenberg – the new WordPress editor which won’t be launched until November 19 (when WordPress 5.0 is scheduled to be released).

While I have some understanding of the big picture as to where WordPress will be in 5 – 10 years, it’s what’s just over the horizon that’s getting my attention.

Gutenberg is a block editing system. Each piece of content – an image, a paragraph, a video, a heading – is created by using a block (a Gutenblock) which is inserted into a page.

But as of now Gutenberg only has, by default, about 40 or so different blocks to work with. That’s just not going to get the job done for all web sites.

Aren’t there an infinite number of Gutenblocks that users will need?

What, for example, about things like…

  • Pricing
  • Tables
  • Accordions
  • Page Heroes
  • Sliders
  • Testimonials

and all sorts of content types?

How will they be handled? We’re going to need a boat load of different blocks.

To solve this problem, the Gutenberg Cloud (an online library of Gutenberg blocks now in beta) is being created by Per Andre Rønsen Lied and the smart people at Frontkom.

Take a look as I show you what this plugin does now and what we’ll likely being seeing in 2019 and beyond.

While there were only 4 blocks in the cloud at the time of this recording, I can see where there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of blocks that will allow us to insert every imaginable content type and more.

Recently WP Tavern posted “Gutenberg Cloud Plugin for WordPress is Now in Beta.”

If you want to have a look at Gutenberg’s future grab the
Cloud Plugin and give it a try.
