New school education policy approved: Grading system, more choice of subjects

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the proposed New Education Policy (NEP 2020) and renamed the Ministry of Education to the HRD.

A group headed by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan submitted the draft of a new policy on education to Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ when he took office last year.

The New Education Policy seeks to reshape, control and govern all facets of the Indian education framework, and create a modern paradigm that is compatible with the aspirational goals of 21st-century education while being compliant with Indian values and value systems.

The new NEP policy includes Pre-primary education, Universal access to education, New Curricular and Pedagogical Structure, No hard separation of arts and sciences, Education in the local language/mother-tongue, Continuation of the three-language formula in schools, Exposure to Classical Languages of India, Physical Education, State School Regulatory Authority, National Research Foundation, Rashtriya Shiksha Aayog.
