Is Liposuction a Good Idea?

There are several different effective interventions to permanently remove fat from the body. Perhaps the most effective intervention for overall weight loss is bariatric surgery such as the “gastric bypass” and “gastric sleeve” operations.

Although effective and durable in terms of results, these are major Surgical procedures which involve significant medical risk.  Many people, however, are not looking for big overall weight loss but rather a decrease in fat in specific strategic areas such as the waist (muffin top), belly (abdominal fat, beer belly, pot belly, stomach fat), arms (arm fat), and chin (double chin).

The traditional, true and tried, method of achieving this is Liposuction. Unlike gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgeries, liposuction targets only the surface “superficial” fat rather than the inner “visceral” fat. Hence, it is a procedure best suited for body contouring rather than overall weight loss. Liposuction is a surgical procedure requiring some anesthesia as well as small surgical incisions (read scars).

In addition to usual possible complications, rare reactions to anesthesia as well as death from fat embolus has also been reported. Like all surgical procedures, the results are dependent on the skill of the operator. In the case of liposuction specifically, the effectiveness of target fat removal as well as the ability to result in even body surfaces after the fat removal depend on the operator’s skill.
