How to Measure SEO Performance? Learn a simple way to track SEO

SEO is the short name for Search Engine Optimization. It is a process of getting free/organic/natural search results and Traffic through search engines. These processes/techniques and strategies help in letting the search engine know that the web pages are worth indexing in their search results.

As the most top ranked search engine “Google” uses many complex algorithms or you can say them as its strategies/criteria to make sure that the website is meeting its ranking factors, based on the same Google will display your web pages in its search results.

There are many ways through which one can measure whether their SEO efforts were successful or not.  It’s easy to say to measure SEO success, but it isn’t actually easy to actually measure it.

There are thousands of things out there in the world of Search Engine Optimization that contribute to the better performance and make sure that whatever strategies and efforts you are putting are not going vain. We cannot measure everything but again we can measure a broader perspective of all those things that will help us know that all the hard work done has not been wasted and has shown its result.

We will be mentioning below three major benchmarks that will help any business in measuring their SEO success.

  1. RANKINGS
  2. TRAFFIC
  3. CONVERSIONS

RANKINGS

Ranking itself is a very big factor for measuring SEO, as it displays the result where you stand when someone searches for the business on which you have been working for months or years. Again ranking is defined by the time you have been on the web. It is determined by the goodwill, quality of information, backlinks, social shares and many other things that help in improving the site quality.

Other factors such as ranking for better results also matter or the strategy that you use for ranking also matters.

For example- You are working on 10 keywords out of which you find that 3 are having high searches and high competition but are on the first page. Now to get on the first page you will have to put more of the optimization efforts and implement a better strategy than the one which you have been following for now. While on the other hand, you will have to just work with the same strategy and fewer optimization efforts in order to rank first on the other 7 keywords that are though not on the first page but are having high searches and low competition. These 10 keywords are most relevant to your work and are expected to bring the same amount of results for each.

This is also a way of choosing the most ideal keywords on which you have to rank upon so that you can have the most preferable result.

TRAFFIC

Traffic is one of the most important things that any business would want on their website. Not just the traffic the relevancy of the traffic is also important to ensure that the traffic that you have gained is not just waste. There are two major things that one can divide traffic into which are as mentioned below.

1. Traffic Volume

Now, this is something that is just measurable in terms of numbers per month or year. In this case, it can only be considered for organic traffic we are getting for the website.

Now in organic search, the volume of the traffic depends completely on the audience size you are targeting for the SEO campaign. Example- If you are looking for something like shirt printing or T-shirt printing in bulk nationwide. You can expect more audience to come your way through organic search while if you are looking for something like best ice cream parlour in the local areas. In that case, you should be prepared for low traffic organically.

2. Traffic Quality

Now, this thing cannot be measured by number but surely other factors which can be measured by number will help in getting meaningful insights. Below mentioned are key KPI (Key performance indicators) for determining the quality of the traffic we are getting.

a. Average Visit Duration

b. Bounce Rate

c. Page per Visit

These three things when reviewed together can help you in deciding whether you have the relevant traffic or not. Now when you will see your bounce rate is higher then it corresponds to you having less average time spent and low page per visit. This will tell you either you have some issues with the website or the quality of the traffic you are getting.

Let us have an example here. Let’s say that our targeted keyword was “avoid pimples” this was in regards to the cosmetic business that one might be doing. While when the audience searched it they searched it in regards to “avoid pimples home remedies” through the keyword could be the same for the searched the psychology behind the search could be different. A simple solution to this could be rank on a keyword such as “cosmetics to avoid pimples”. In this way, the customer will be looking for the same cosmetics rather than home remedies. This is why being more specific in terms of the traffic and keyword is always beneficial. For the same reason, the client will be more inclined towards spending time on the website reading about the cosmetic.

CONVERSIONS

This is one of the most important and key KPI that defines the success of the SEO. This will also vary depending on your goal as let’s say if your KPI was to make sure that generate N numbers of leads through getting the visitors to fill a form or making a phone call. In such scenarios “the number of people who completed the KPI/ the number of visits on the website” will define your SEO success, but Keep in mind that we are only counting the organic searches and organic conversions.

With this, you can also determine how many of the audience coming actually liked what you have shared and how many of them are interested in what you are offering. All this should be working fine and you can also determine which keywords brought you the most of the traffic and which brought most of the conversions.

This all will help you in determining the ROI (Return on investment) for the whole SEO campaign. This will enable you to know the amount and time spent on the SEO efforts and resource actually got you any result or not. But this is not just for your initial profits which you might have gained through this but these SEO ranking and everything else will also keep rewarding you in the longer term/ future. Thus as these conversions continue to happen for a longer duration this criteria will not allow you to exactly depict the ROI from the SEO campaign.

In summary; all the SEO performance measurement will not help for these cases but will give you a healthy insight for further action to be taken to ensure the future performance is also enhanced and site is also improved.
