Call it a sign of Global Warming, as Scientists in the continent of Antarctica have recently recorded a temperature of 20.75C (69.35F, 293.9K) which has baffled the world as this is the first time that the mercury has crossed 20C.
A Brazilian scientist named Carlos Schaefer told, ‘We’d never seen a temperature this high in Antarctica’
The record temperature was read at Seymour Island which is at the Northern tip of Antarctica and the Island is home to Argentina’s Marambio Research Base.
Carlos also said that the reading was taken at a northern tip of the continent which has no meaning for the climate change trend as it might have been due to an anomaly that could have been happening in the surrounding area.
However, he noted that the temperature never crossed 18-19C which was termed hottest days during his term at Research Base.
These changes in weather conditions are helping Ice sheets melt over the Antarctic and thus threatening coastal cities and small island nations with rising sea levels.
The current news came after last week where the record of 18.3C was recorded at Esperanza Base of Argentine Antarctica.
United Nations said the temperature has consistently risen over the past decade and 2019 was said to be the hottest year since after 2016. If it continues for the year 2020 then no doubt we could face even the hottest days in the near future.
