China bans the entry of foreigners temporarily. EVEN IF YOU HAVE A VISA!

In view of the rapid spread of COVID-19 around the world, China’s foreign ministry just announced that China will temporarily ban the entry of foreigners holding visas or residency permits into China.

Foreigners holding visas or residency permits that are still valid at the time of this announcement are not permitted to enter the mainland as of March 28, 2020.

The suspension is a temporary step that allows China to take into account other countries ‘ outbreak situations and practices. Under the unique circumstances, China must stay in close touch with all sides and properly handle staff exchanges with the rest of the world.
The above steps will be calibrated and announced accordingly, in the light of the changing situation.

Why is China doing this?

There had been no new cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours in Hubei province, China, including the city of Wuhan, where COVID-19 was first discovered, on the 19th of March 2020.

The Chinese authorities have introduced unprecedented measures in January in an effort to contain the virus, including suspending all travel in and out of all cities in Hubei province and preventing the province’s 59 million people from leaving home. The positive results shown by these drastic measures along with the increasingly worrying situation in the rest of the world have forced the government to stay extremely vigilant and to continue their efforts with unprecedented safety measures.

In its announcement, the ministry said that despite the mixed response to the pandemic in other nations, it has “no alternative” to the new ban. Beijing informed group of global health officials this week that it was forced to reconsider policies after its lockdown reduction caused an influx of overseas travelers who might carry the virus.

China’s National Health Commission expressed their concern in their latest report on the 19th of March: “On March 18, the Chinese mainland reported 34 new imported confirmed cases from overseas (21 in Beijing municipality, 9 in Guangdong province, 2 in Shanghai municipality, 1 in Heilongjiang province, and 1 in Zhejiang province). As of 24:00 on March 18, the Chinese mainland had reported 189 imported confirmed cases from overseas.”
