There are many grand buildings in the world. The Taj  Mahal is one of them. It is one of the seven wonders of the world. It is situated on the right bank River Yamuna at Agra. It was built by great Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Begum. It contains the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Begum. Kings and emperors have many wives in those days but, Shah Jahan had only one wife. He loved her a lot. He lived with her about twenty years and after that Mumtaz died in 1931.



The Taj Mahal was constructed in 1648  by the order of  Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. It took twenty thousand people and approximately twenty-two years to build it. The Taj Mahal is built of pure white marbles. It was built at a cost of thirty lakhs of rupees in those cheap days. There is no other building more beautiful than the Taj in the World.

The main building of the Taj Mahal is built on a platform of red sandstone. It has four tall towers. All around there are lawns of green grass as well as beautiful flowers. The Yamuna flows past the building. It is a wonderful thing to see, especially on a full moon night. Thousands of people from every part of the world visit every day. Every tourist makes it a point to see it while he or she is on a visit to India.
