Coming in at number five is the Christ the King College in Onitsha, known to many as CKC Onitsha. It is a secondary school for boys that, at one point, was the best school in Nigeria. CKC Onitsha was founded in 1933 by a group of Irish missionaries led by Archbishop Charles Heerey. The primary mission of this school is to use the Roman Catholic environment and tradition for development of the new generation of Nigerian leaders. Students are assigned to different school houses (dormitories) for sports competition, management and administration purposes. Before the civil war, the houses bore the names of St. Joseph, St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Charles and St. Williams. These days, there are more houses, and they are called Flanagan, Butler, Allagoa, Orjiakor, Mbanefo, Aniogu, Arize, Modebe, Okagbue, Heerey, Azikiwe, Brolly and Tagbo.

Number 4 is Grange School, a private school in Ikeja, Lagos. It was founded in 1958 by British expatriates, who wanted to offer Nigerian children quality education by British standards. Grange School provides its students with a healthy inclusive environment filled with activities that transcend the classroom walls. Children can get involved in various sports, arts, debating and so many other things that can help them learn the importance of teamwork, discover their creativity and prepare them for their adult lives. Grange students can live at home or stay at the Grange House, where they will be able to forge life-long friendships and get involved in all sorts of fun activities.

Opening our top-3 is the Loyola Jesuit College, which is a private secondary school in Abuja. It was founded in 1996 by the Society of Jesus (Roman Catholic Church) and named after the founder of the Society, St. Ignatius of Loyola. For the past seven years, this school has been consistently in the top based on the WASSCE exams, which makes it one of the best schools not only in Nigeria, but also in the whole of West Africa. Loyola Jesuit College is a boarding school, so all of the students have to live on its premises under the supervision of the Society of Jesus members. As of now, the school houses more than 600 students. It is located on a large site in Gidan Mangoro and surrounded by the beautiful nature. Apart from receiving quality education, students can also partake in athletic activities, formational and extracurricular programmes. Student development is the primary goal of this fine institution.

Second place on our list goes to the famous Kings’ College. It is one of the oldest secondary institutions in Nigeria, being founded all the way back in 1909. When it first opened, it had only ten students, and the school building was located near Tafawa Balewa Square. It is a boys-only school, but girls have been also allowed there before the creation of Queen’s College. The school has four houses that are named after past principals (Nigerian Hogwarts, anyone?). The Hyde-Johnson’s House has red as its primary colour; Panes’ House has blue; Mckee-Wright’s Hose has yellow; and Harman’s House has green. Kings’ College employs passionate teachers, provides its students with excellent boarding and sporting facilities and offers them exceptional security.

The best secondary school in Nigeria is Atlantic Hall. It is a private school on the outskirts of Lagos that was established in 1989. Before choosing Epe as its permanent location, it was located in the Maryland area of Ikeja. It currently has over 600 students. Similarly to Kings’ College, Atlantic Hall has four houses, but in this case they are named after precious stones. Students can be assigned to houses named Topaz, Sapphire, Garnet and Emerald. Each house has a House Parent that is responsible for the kids. Atlantic Hall is based on Christian faith, but it allows and celebrates all expressions and forms of faith. Students are taught moral values and guided towards finding and developing their talents. The school provides challenging and enriching education that is great for any student.
