CAS letter in the UK

Studying abroad comes with a tedious process- filling out the application form, qualifying English proficiency tests, framing a personal essay, and completing other formalities. Apart from other essential documents, the importance of a Cas Letter can not be ignored as it is essential to apply for a Visa to study in the UK. It is a letter issued by the institution that you have applied to, and it is counted as one of the crucial documents for a UK visa application.

Still confused about what a CAS letter is? Please read the entire blog to know more about it in detail.

What is a CAS letter

CAS, Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, is a crucial document you must know if you are trying to secure admission in the UK. You must hold a CAS before applying for the UK Student Visa (Tier 4 General). It is an electronic document issued by the college or university that you have chosen to study at.

CAS will be valid for student visa applications for six months from the date of issue. You will also receive a unique reference number from your institution that will match up with your CAS. This reference number is to be mentioned on the Tier 4 visa application form. This number and corroborating documents will be checked by the visa official processing your application to confirm an unconditional offer from the university has been given to you.

You will also receive a ‘CAS statement’ from your institution, and it is sent to you by email. It is not needed for your Tier 4 visa application. Still, it gives the information about your course, sponsor and some information about money that you require to complete your Tier 4 visa application form.

The CAS statement tells you the following information:

  • 14 digit reference number for the CAS
  • Sponsor License Number (SLN) of the university where you wish to study
  • Title of the course
  • Tuition fees of the first year or the entire course
  • Start and end dates of the course
  • Any tuition fees that has already been paid to the university by you
  • Any accommodation fees that has already been paid by you
  • English language ability, i.e. IELTS or TOEFL scores

How to Apply for Student Visa

International students who want to study in the UK and have accepted the offer from the university as well as paid the deposit amount for the program are issued a CAS letter and reference number from the university. Once students get the CAS letter, they are eligible to apply for the student visa application.

Every university follows a different procedure. Once the offer is accepted, the University, on behalf of the student, contacts the UK government’s UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) for CAS number and verifies that the student is accepted to study at the university.

UKVI issues the CAS number to the university, and the university issues it to the student. Many universities automatically issue the CAS letter after the offer is accepted and the fee deposit is paid. In contrast, some universities require students to register on the official website and then obtain the letter.

Documents Required for CAS

To receive the CAS letter without any obstacles, make sure to submit some documents during the application process. Along with an updated passport, you will also have to submit marksheets or transcripts of the previous UG or PG course you completed. Ensure that all the documents are valid and have all the proper credentials. Your CAS number will be issued only after verification of the documents.

Points to Remember

There are various reasons which can lead to delay of the CAS letter. It is essential to carefully complete all the formalities to receive the letter on time. Some reasons which can cause a delay in the issue of your CAS letter are:

  • Not enough time left to apply for the Tier 4 visa
  • You are not able to arrive at the university before the start of the course
  • The applicant is already enrolled in a part-time course
  • Lack of required funds
  • Submission of illegal documents
  • The request for CAS is filed after the deadline

Processing Time for a CAS Letter

The CAS letter is generally issued on a first-come-first-served basis. Because of this, the students who have submitted their applications at an early date will be given the priority. The institution will check the set of documents provided by the students, and once confirmed, you will secure the letter in 2-3 business days (it can take a few days more). Though CAS is an important document, there is no fixed time duration that a university takes to release it.

What to do in the Case of Delay in a CAS letter

A CAS Number is issued 4 months before beginning the program. International students have enough time to apply for a student visa and prepare for their trip to an unknown country. If there is a delay, international students can reach out to the University and know the reason for the same.

The application process of taking admission to universities abroad can be an ambiguous task. Hopefully, this blog on the CAS letter was helpful for you.
