Studying abroad can be a great way to gain exposure and international experience. Nowadays, more and more students are crossing borders for their studies. China, for instance, is one of the largest sources of international students.

A huge number of students, about 10,000 from 181 different countries, participated in The QS Top-50 Most Popular Destinations for International Students survey. This extensive poll showed us what students consider to be the most important factors when considering whether or not to study abroad. Using these rankings, we looked at all the destinations in the world where you could potentially study to find out which are among the best places in 2022 to do so.

The top ten countries with the most international students are the United States, Australia, the UK, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Russia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Each country has individual educational advantages, like attractive study abroad policies and job prospects that make it hard to choose just one as a destination.

Here are the top 5 study abroad destinations for international students:

Next, let’s go into the top five destinations for 2022.

1. USA

As one of the most desired destinations for international students, the US is a standard study abroad choice. International students worldwide are eager to continue their studies in the US and earn their “title” as the most desired destination. In 2019, there were 1,095,299 international students enrolled in the United States.

According to the Open Doors 2021 report, 914,095 international students studied in US colleges and universities in the 2021 academic year, a 15% reduction from the previous academic year.

International students communicate and share their views in a multicultural environment that is different from any other educational environment. It’s helped cultivate intellectual curiosity and offers a new perspective on education because the USA’s education system focuses on broadening horizons and encouraging creative curiosity. Open education allows students to stay focused on their interests and not be limited by what they want to do.

Top Universities in the US Acceptance Rates
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 6.7%
Stanford University 4.3%

According to statistics, the overall number of overseas students studying in the United Kingdom as of 2021 is 605,130.

Tuition in the United Kingdom is relatively high, but the course structure can quickly help you get out of there. Most colleges and universities offer a three-year Bachelor’s degree program as well as a one-year Master’s degree by coursework program. With this type of schedule, you can go abroad for a year and return for your degree before you know it. It’s also globally recognized, making the UK an excellent country for international students.

Top Universities in the UK Acceptance Rates
Aberystwyth University 96.1%
University of Roehampton 93.9%

According to the DAAD study, the number of newly enrolled international students increased from roughly 64,000 in the 2020 winter semester to between 72,000 and 80,000 in the 2021 winter semester.

One of Germany’s strengths is its practical, hands-on approach to academic learning. Students focus on mechanics, electronics, and engineering topics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Heidelberg University. Germany is an excellent choice if you’re going for a science or technology major.

4. Australia

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for international students because it has a quality education and an excellent environment for university study. Australia is part of the Commonwealth of Nations, and its policy on student mobility is quite flexible. It’s also famous for its position in educational export.

Due to border closures that lasted until December 2021, the number of overseas students in Australia declined even more severely in 2021 than in 2020. As a result, overall enrollment declined by 17% to 570,626.

There are 38 universities and more than 230 vocational colleges readily available throughout the country. These include the University of Sydney, UNSW, University of Melbourne, Monash University, Adelaide University, Queensland University, and Australian National University, all ranked in the top 100 universities globally.

5. Canada

Canada is another well-known destination for studying abroad. It’s relatively cheaper than many places, and their immigration policy is tempting as well. In fact, Canada always takes pride in the high quality of education.

In 2020, approximately 450,000 new study permits were issued in Canada, substantially breaking the previous all-time high established in 2019. Unsurprisingly, the month between July and August saw the greatest number of new study licenses issued, totaling over 200,000, just before the start of the 2021/22 academic year.

There are a lot of educational choices out there. Still, you have to think about what you qualify for and your interests before enrolling in a university.
