Introduction of Beam & Types of Beam


A Beam is a structural element that primarily resists loads applied laterally to the beam's axis. Its mode of deflection is primarily by bending. The loads applied to the beam result in reaction forces at the beam's support points. The total effect of all the forces acting on the beam is to produce shear forces and bending moments within the beam.

Types of Beam:

Following are the various types of Beams:

  1. Simply Supported Beam.
  2. Fixed Beam.
  3. Cantilever Beam.
  4. Continuously Supported Beam
  5. Overhanging Beam

Simply Supported Beam:

A beam is supported at its both ends is known as simply supported Beam.

Fixed Beam:

A beam whose both ends are fixed is known as the Fixed beam.

Cantilever Beam:

A beam fixed at one end and free at the other end is known as a cantilever Beam.

Continuously Supported Beam:

A beam supported on more than two supports is known as a continuously supported beam or continuous Beam.

Overhanging Beam:

A Beam having its end portion extended beyond the support is known as overhanging Beam.
A Beam may be overhanging on one side or on both sides.
