Dear Herr N., 23 November 1945
When moral weakness is coupled with a relatively good Intelligence, as seems to be the case with you, one must use this intelligence when the ethical sense fails.
This trite bit of wisdom cannot teach you any psychotherapy, but you must understand it and simply apply it yourself. If you can make this minimal use of your intelligence, you
are saved.
If not, not.
Yours truly,
C.G. Jung
Note: N., who was awaiting trial for a petty offence, asked for advice as to how not to succumb to similar temptations in the future (he was at the time on probation for a similar offence committed two years before). ~Carl Jung, Letters Volume 1, Page 393.
