Garhwal University, at the present time known as Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) is a public university was come to existence on 1 December 1973 under the provisions of Uttar Pradesh State Universities Act (Act No. 10 of 1973) and the Act come in force w e f 1 December 1973. It was renamed as Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University in 1989 in the memory of a leading statesman Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna.
