Technology could make free College a reality, says Sal Khan, founder of the online (and free) Khan Academy, in an Education Week interview with Benjamin Herold.
He’s piloting an online “mastery-based, personalized college algebra course” with Howard University. Students who achieve mastery will earn transferable college credits.
“If it works for college algebra, why can’t it work for 10 other courses?” says Khan. “Why can’t we have a world where students can get the first two years of college for free no matter where they are?”
The first two years, when students are in large lecture classes, are the most profitable for universities, so they may not have an incentive to cooperate. On the other hand, non-elite colleges need to compete for students.
