Lockdown stress: Suicides, child abuse

Suicide rates are up in northern California. “Doctors at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek say they have seen more deaths by Suicide during this quarantine period than deaths from the COVID-19 virus, reports ABC News.

“We’ve seen a year’s worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks,” said Dr. Mike deBoisblanc, head of the trauma department. Continuing to tell people to “shelter in place” is threatening community health, he believes.

Child abuse reports are down, while Stress is way up. That’s probably because children are isolated from teachers and other adults outside their immediate family.

The economic crisis brought on by coronavirus shutdowns “is a silent killer”,” writes Alex Azar, secretary of Health and Human Services, in a Washington Post commentary.

Estimates suggest that each one percentage point increase in the unemployment rate translates into a 1 percent increase in suicide deaths and a more than 3 percent increase in opioid deaths, which means this virus-induced recession will likely cause tens of thousands of excess deaths.

Americans aren’t receiving diagnostic services, such as mammograms and colonoscopies, writes Azar. “We could already have 200,000 or more undiagnosed cancer cases as a result.”

Infants and children are at risk for serious illnesses, because pediatric visits and vaccinations are way down.
