Water Pollution Threatens Our Existence

Water Pollution Threatens Our ExistenceThere is a global problem with water Pollution, basically caused by us humans who seem to have no regard for anything in nature, even when our very lives depend on that self-same natural resource. We do not seem to realise, or is it that we just don’t care that without water we and all other life on earth as we know it will cease to exist.

For over 2000 years we have done exactly as we please, stripping mother earth of Natural Resources which we have used to improve our lives to satisfy our greed and own egos. We paid no attention to nature; instead we treated our natural resources, including our seas, lakes, rivers and everything else with contempt, which has led to pollution on a massive scale.

We are currently faced with global warming and climate change, once again basically caused by Man, which are wreaking havoc all over the globe, causing droughts, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis and various other natural disasters that threaten our very existence.

Polluted water, a result of industry runoffs, fracking, factory farms using pesticides that then end up in our groundwater, is one of the world’s biggest health risks. Rainwater that should be basically pure is not, and is instead inundated with Toxic chemicals, bacteria, dirt, trash, and various other toxic substances, all of which land up in our oceans, lakes and rivers.

You may think that because you live in a First World country your tap water is pure, but think again – chemicals added to the water to purify it and supposedly to prevent tooth decay are themselves toxic and can cause various diseases, including cancer. Aging infrastructure in many countries is leaching lead and other heavy metals into your drinking water.

There are in excess of 70 000 known water pollutants; more than 12 000 toxic chemical compounds are currently in industrial use and in excess of 500 more are added annually. Freshwater animals are becoming extinct five times faster than land animals and around 10 000 children under the age of five die in Third World countries from water-related illnesses every day.

It takes 44 Litres of water to process one chicken and 35 litres to process one can of fruit or vegetables; processing one barrel of beer requires 5 680 litres of water and it takes about 7 000 litres of water to refine one barrel of crude oil.

Think about what your water footprint is, save water and use it sparingly, and for the love of humanity, start looking after this most vital of resources or soon the human race will become extinct for lack of it.
