The Ketchup vs. Mustard Debate Continues! Which Is Better?

It’s time to start talking about the big issues. In a divisive world split on every topic from politics to movie preferences, we cannot ignore the conflicts that matter. The issue we want to address today? Ketchup vs. Mustard. Which condiment do people prefer on Hot Dogs at their favorite Hot Dog franchise? It’s time we find out.

We know what you’re thinking: Hot Dog on a Stick is just a Hot Dog Franchise, how could they be equipped to handle a discussion as serious as the Ketchup vs. Mustard debate?

Our experience in the hot dog industry gives us a little bit of authority on this age-old debate. This question is on par with important arguments like cats vs. dogs and pancakes vs. waffles. Is it possible to find an answer? Will there ever be a definitive solution?

It’s time to find out.

Hot Dog Etiquette (Is a Real Thing)

According to Hot-Dog.org, there are rules for eating hot dogs. Who knew? We always thought that hot dogs are delicious any way and on any occasion. That being said, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) has outlined a list of suggestions for hot dog etiquette.

As a matter of fact, this list features a condiment suggestion for “proper” consumption of hot dogs. The site specifically says not to put ketchup on a hot dog unless you are under the age of 18. Mustard, however, is mentioned as an ideal companion for a hot dog.

It is worth noting, however, that this etiquette page speaks specifically about eating a hot dog on a bun. There are no suggestions for eating a hot dog battered in sweet cornbread.

The debate continues.

A Close Race

Hot dog connoisseurs recommend against using ketchup, but popular opinion reveals that Americans don’t follow that advice. According to research by NHDSC, ketchup is not far behind mustard in popularity. In fact, ketchup is the second favorite topping in America.

Even so, people prefer mustard, with 71% of the respondents naming it their favorite topping. In comparison, 52% of respondents prefer ketchup. The true takeaway of this survey is that a high number of people put both mustard and ketchup on their hot dogs.

Have We Gone Too Far?

Make no mistake, people get fiery about the condiments they put on hot dogs. This hotly debated issue is as divisive as any other, with the anti-ketchup people being exceptionally adamant. You can buy a book called, Never Put Ketchup on a Hot Dog. Some people believe, especially in Chicago, that “putting ketchup on a hot dog is the end of the world.” There is even a Buzzfeed quiz to determine if you are more ketchup or mustard.

At the end of the day, these are two delicious condiments that go well on hot dogs. Hot Dog on a Stick is a hot dog franchise that won’t pass judgment on your condiment choices. We are proud to serve both ketchup and mustard to our customers. Each of these tasty toppings complement our all-beef hot dogs (also available in turkey and tofu) that are freshly dipped in our exclusive party batter.
