Yeşilköy Feneri is a historical lighthouse still in use located on the northern coast of Sea of Marmara at Yeşilköy neighborhood in Istanbul's Bakırköy district, The first lighthouse in the Bosporus, at the gates of the Marmara Sea, it safeguards seamen, keeping them from crashing into land with its light and sound. The first name of this lighthouse which was built on the Yeşilköy burnu in 1856 by Ottoman Empire as a stone tower was Ayastafonas Lighthouse and has been changed as a Yeşilköy Lighthouse in accordance with the district.

Yeşilköy lighthouse is a historical lighthouse still in use located on the northern coast of Sea of Marmara at Yeşilköy neighborhood in Istanbul's Bakırköy district, Turkey. Lighthouse has been serving its diverse menu in the lighthouse for 15 years and accords itself well with the history of the building. Located in the Yeşilyurt neighborhood, the restaurant is surrounded by hotels, which obstruct the view on one side of the building. Nevertheless, the food is good, the service is friendly and the atmosphere completes the dinner.

Yeşilköy is also one of the favorite books of sea-farers with its marina and its lighthouse on the shore. Commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid I (reigned 1839–1861) from French engineers to ensure naval safety. Its whistle blows in the fog while its light guides sea captains.

The outbuilding of the lighthouse was converted into a fish and seafood restaurant, which can host 100 guests in the main hall and 40 people in the conservatory. Furthermore, 150 customers can dine on an open-air terrace in the summer months. If you’d like to salute the Sea of Marmara, the night sky or the crews, you should choose the stylish restaurant Fener Lokantası at the foot of the lighthouse.

Construction Date : 05.06.1856

Location : Located at the end of the Fener Yolu Caddesi in Yeşilköy, about 12 km (7.5 mi) southwest of downtown Istanbul, near the international airport. The first lighthouse that the vessels, which are to be enter to the Istanbul Strait safely from Marmara Sea, see in order to determine their courses is Yeşilköy Lighthouse. This lighthouse serves as a landfall light for vessels arriving in Istanbul from the Sea of Marmara.

Building : Tower shape octagonal prism tower centerd on the keeper's house. White masonry tower. Octagonal stone tower centered on a 1-story octagonal keeper's house. Lighthouse painted white. A two-story outbuilding is annexed, that was used as the keeper's living quarters and for administrative purposes. A gallery encircles the tower's lantern room. Atop the tower's cupola, a flag post is erected.

Light
Yeşilköy Lighthouse went in service on January 5, 1857. Initially, it was lit by kerosene, but was later replaced by a Dalén light using carbide (acetylene gas). Nowadays, the light runs on electricity. The lighthouse's lantern has a 500mm catadioptric cylindrical lens and a 500 W light source that flashes every 10 seconds in group. Its white light is visible at a range of 15 nmi (28 km). In foggy conditions, a foghorn sounds every 30 seconds to warn of the hazardous area.

Oil lamp has primarily been used and then high intense filament lamps work with LPCo as a light source and it is currently provided an illumination with the electric lamp of 1500 W.  At the date of establishment flashing there by blacking and clearing to the light source by dark screens rounding around the optic operated with electric acetylene flash afterwards and it has still been operating with electrical flash.

The Coastal Safety Directorate has the history of the station. Lighthouse and guardian house is under protection as national heritage by General Directorate of Coastal Safety and Salvage Administrations.
