Tucked away at the base of 10,909-ft Carson Peak, June Lake is a little nature lovers haven. In the the winter you can enjoy all things snow - ski, snowboard, go on snowshoe hikes and play in the snow. June Mountain Ski Area is a popular family resort that offers kids under 12 FREE skiing and snowboarding all winter long -- every day, no restrictions. We went in June, because after all its June lake :)
It was beautiful sunny day when we got there, and we stayed in a little apartment in a small alpine styled cottage, very well appointed and with a small clean attic which our son loved! After a quick refresh, we went to the June Lake beach - where we whiled away the rest of the afternoon. Parking was free, and there are restrooms in the parking lot. The beach itself is a pebble beach with coarse sand and rocks, so filp flops are advisable. The water in the lake is not too deep, about 2-3 feet deep, specially along the beach so everybody in the water was having a great time. The water is clear and you can see through to the bottom, so lots of kids were out with fishing nets, floats etc. The best part of its is really the view - sandy beach, blue lake, snow on the mountains and a beautiful blue sky all in one glance.
We spent a very relaxed time there and when we got back to the town, we stopped at the Curio shop to buy a June Lake Tshirt! There is a very busy tackle and bait shop, that is open all hours - so the fishing must be good! A great place to spend a quiet weekend with family, with lots of outdoor activities nearby. For example we went on a kayak tour of Mono Lake the next day, but that's another blog:)
