The best places to watch the solar eclipse in the Lake District

The biggest Solar Eclipse for since 1999 will take place on the 20th March with the UK to be plunged into murky darkness for nearly two hours

The Solar event, which sees the Moon’s alignment between the Sun and Earth blocking our stars light, will start around 9:40am and end at 10:40am. The maximum eclipse will occur at around 9:30am.

Alongside all the usual advice on how to protect your eyes whilst looking towards the sun (no doubt the supermarkets will be handing out paper ray bans) we thought it would be good to tell you where the best places to view the eclipse will be in the Lake District.

So here are the best places to watch the solar eclipse in the Lake District.

Lake Derwentwater

Perhaps the most stunning lake in the Lakelands, Derwentwater is renowned for being a ‘moody’ lake in the way it reflects the sunrise and sunset – often also shrouded in mist. Lake Derwentwater would be a fantastic spot to throw down a picnic blanket, whip out the flask of coffee and spend a couple of hours watching the Moon’s passage across the Sun and seeing how the lakes surface reflects and reacts.

Scafell Pike

Want to get closer to the action? The highest fell in the Lake District, Scafell Pike is also the highest mountain in the Lake District and would serve as the perfect viewing platform to observe the solar eclipse.

At just under 1,000 metres high, there’s no better place to get a clear view of the theatre of our solar system.

Blencathra

A fantastic mountain range towards the northern tip of the Lake District, Blencathra has six separate fell tops and boasts staggeringly remote landscapes that would offer a fantastic photo backdrop as the atmosphere across the range changes with the dying light.

Wherever you are in the Lake District, you are bound to get a great viewpoint of the eclipse. If you find yourself by one of the regions great lakes, on a walk up the fells or even just sitting outside a coffee shop in Keswick, take half an hour to enjoy what promises to be a stunning spectacle.
