Lake District festivals to Enjoy in 2017

You have already learned 10 facts about Lake District, but there is always so much to see and do all year round in the Lake District. There is a full programme of excellent events throughout the year with something for all ages and tastes.

Here is our pick of the top ten Lake District Festivals and fairs that shouldn’t be missed.

Keswick Film Festival, 16-19 February 2017

The local landscape serves as inspiration for the poetry theme for this year’s festival which will take visitors on a trip all around the world, exploring the creative process and the individuals behind some of the most celebrated writing – from 16th Century England to 20th Century South America. The event also promises thought-provoking documentaries, special guests and a chance to sample the best film festivals across the globe.

Megacon, 25 February 2017

A gamers paradise, Megacon promises great fun for all ages. There will be stalls, competitions, tournaments, shows and activities for avid gamers. From duelling in Xbox and Wii U Gaming Tournaments, to battling the universe with X-Wing Miniatures to Pokémon and everything in between. Plus there will also be quiz to find the nerdiest nerd and a chance to show off your skills in the Art Competition.

Words by the Water, 3-12 March 2017

Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake will this year be host once again to a unique festival of words and ideas. Writers and readers can come together to share the pleasure of books, thoughts and words. There will be a number of talks, lectures, discussions, workshops and special exhibitions.

Kirby Lonsdale Beer and Music Festival, 28-30 April 2017

This celebration of beer, music and food takes place at the home of Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club, Underley Park. There will be live music across the weekend, plus of course a huge variety of beers to enjoy. The traditional ale bar will offer over 15 varieties of traditional and fruit ciders, along with brewed ales.

The Cumberland Sausage Festival, 29 April-1 May 2017

Muncaster Castle will host this celebration of food, drink and everything Cumbrian. There will of course be the makers of the famous and hugely popular, Cumberland sausage and also a variety of local specialist food and drink suppliers. Also celebrity chefs, cookery demonstrations, sausage competitions and stalls selling crafts and gifts.

Keswick Jazz and Blues Festival, 11-14 May 2017

This year’s festival combines the music from the early days of Jazz with traditional British jazz, plus some of the best hip-swinging music from New Orleans. The festival is spread out across a number of venues around the town.

Muncaster Festival, 28-30 May 2017

Munster Festival takes place on the front lawn of Munster Castle and offers great family entertainment. With its carnival atmosphere, the festival finishes with the unique and very entertaining International Jesters Tournament. Contenders will battle it out in the hope of winning the title of Fool of Muncaster 2017.

Cumberland County Show, 17 June 2017

Each year, the county show offers a great day out for all the family. The show celebrates traditional farming, food and the countryside. There will be livestock classes and horses – including show jumping and horse driving competitions. Plus a dog show and vintage vehicle classes.

Lake District Summer Music International Festival, 29 July-11 August 2017

With the backdrop of the Lake District’s unique and rich cultural heritage, the festival celebrates music from across the world. The event offers a diverse programme of music performed by international musicians and is popular with musicians and music lovers of all ages.

Lakes International Comic Art Festival, 13-15 October 2017

This annual festival celebrates great comic art from across the world. Highlights from this year’s festival include MAD cartoonist Sergio Aragonés and there will be special tributes to the talented creator of The Moomins, Tove Jansson and Will Eisner, creator of The Spirit.
