We Bought an Unlocked cell phone ($60).  At the destination country (Costa Rica) we bought a sim chip ($20) at the airport.  It was great for local calls, playing downloaded music and used Google Maps over the (cell network) as our GPS.  4 Gig of data fro the month was plenty.
