Costa Rica: from Manual Antonio to Play Conchal

Costa Rica: From Manual Antonio To Play Conchal
We enjoyed Costa Rica a couple of years ago and had to go back. This time around we flew into San Jose started our vacation in Manual Antonio.  We went up to Playa Canchal to stay in the Westin.  It was under a different name last time.  We flew home from Liberia.

We rented our SUV from Sixt, a German company.  The car was in good shape. There was no hassle.  We were happy.

For the GPS, Ann bought an unlocked (BLU) phone from Amazon.com for $60.  We bought a SIM at the airport in San Jose so we could get on the local phone networks dirt cheap.  The $20 SIM got us 4 gig of data.  It was much more than we needed for Google Maps and local phone calls.

Notes about Costa Rica as a vacation destination

It is about being outside in nature.

The Booz was cheaper at San Jose airport at the baggage claim than duty free in the US.

Use US $ most places.  Bring lost of ones and fives.  If you spend twenties, you usually get change back in Colones.  We got $10 back in Colones as change but when we tried to spend it, the buying power was $9.  It's an exchange rate thing.

If you live in the US, you won't need a power converter for your gadgets.

Drive on the same side as the U.S.

They take Master Card and American Express.  With most other cards, your are SOL.

In the hotels, expect the hot and cold water to be reversed.  In the showers, sometimes, half way between hot and cold water setting is where the hot water hides.

Tip the people ta the restaurants and hotels when they deserve it.  Most make about $10 a day.

Manual Antonio

It was a long and winding road to this town.  It must have taken us 5 hours.  We liked it.  There we stayed at a nice little hotel, hiked and went white water rafting.  The following videos show off our activities.

On the way North

We went up into the mountains to zip line.  We spent the night at a cool little hotel on a cliff. This is a must do.  They have some of the best zip lining and white water rapids in the world.  It was only minutes from some amazing zip lining.  Warning, the rods up the mountain is gravel.  You want an SUV and a little courage.   A sedan will get you up there...  Probably.  It's an issue of clearance rather than horsepower.

What you see under water

The irony is you'll see more animals at the resorts than in the wild

We mainly ate out.  But for two days we at at the resort.

The Rio Perdidio resort makes for a day trip from Playa Conchal.  We went there to do white water rafting and soak in a stream heated by underground volcanic activity.
