Isabella Street

Tucked away behind Southwark station is the pretty Isabella Street. A hidden gem consisting of a few bars and restaurants set into the railway arches with a bamboo and shrub lined walkway.

This is an ideal spot for a first date in London with everything you need all in one place in a handy central location.

A fairly well-kept secret from the masses, Isabella Street still enjoys being busy most nights of the week with the after-work crowd giving it a lively atmosphere. It’s a great place to go before or after catching a show at one of the Vic theatres or a walk along the Southbank. At night this little street is lit with fairy lights and has a holiday feel to it, a bit like St Katherine Docks.

Thinking of going? Like we said, there’s only a few establishments there, you can read about them below.

Ev

Part of the Tas restaurant group, this bakery, delicatessen, bar and Anatolian Turkish restaurant has a bustling atmosphere and is a fantastic place to eat. Whether you just fancy a snack from the deli, a delicious mezze platter in the restaurant or a cocktail in the bar next door you’re sure to enjoy a meal at Ev.

The portions are on the small side compared to other Turkish restaurants however don’t let this put you off as there’s nothing worse than feeling too full on a date. If it’s a nice day, try and get a seat outside amid the foliage. If you’re looking to keep the price down, Ev has deals on mezze and two or three course meals, we recommend going for one of the mezze sharing menus because it’s obviously more fun to share.

Jack’s Bar

A fun and buzzing bar that has a nice choice of US and UK craft beers and ales as well as sumptuous cocktails. Whilst Jack’s is in a cavernous railway arch it still feels comfortable and cosy with wood paneling, sofas and bookcases breaking up the space giving it a very relaxed feel. It’s popular bar with the after-work crowd but has normally chilled out a bit by 8 or 9pm. Fridays are always busy with DJ’s spinning beats from the raised booth so perfect if you want to get your groove on.

With a very reasonably priced menu serving up pizzas, burgers and dogs, it’s an easy bar to grab a bite at, the menu is small so what they do serve, they do well. If you’re eating at one of the other restaurants on Isabella Street make sure to grab a drink in Jack’s afterwards.

Thai Silk

Serving tasty and fresh Thai favourites, Thai Silk is a comfy restaurant that doesn’t disappoint on quality. Service is quick and the staff are very friendly, with it being a popular restaurant the atmosphere is always roaring so booking is recommended. There is a club / bar attached to the side so try not to get a seat next to this as you won’t be able to hear each other but it’s worth visiting afterwards for a few drinks.

On Fridays and Saturdays Isabella Street can get very busy so go mid-week for a more relaxed date night.
