Did you watch the final of the Confederations Cup at the weekend?

This year’s event is the 10th time the FIFA Confederations Cup has been held. Hosted by Russia as a prelude to next year’s FIFA World Cup, it brought together some of the world’s best teams from across the globe – Germany, Mexico, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Portugal, Cameroon and hosts Russia.

After a series of thrilling matches in the group and knockout stages, Germany ended up as this year’s champions, with a 1 – 0 victory over Chile. Portugal came from behind to beat Mexico 2 – 1 to take third.

This is the first time Russia has hosted the tournament, and the third time the Confederations Cup has been held in the continent of Europe. It provided a great opportunity to showcase some of the venues which will host matches in next year’s World Cup, namely:

• The Spartak Stadium in Moscow (capacity 45 360) – usually known as the Otkritie Arena, this is the home of Spartak Moscow and was opened in 2014;
• The Kazan Arena in Kazan (capacity 45 379) – Rubin Kazan moved out of their old, multi-purpose Central Stadium to the new Kazan Arena in 2013. It’s notable for having the largest outside screen in Europe, running across one stand’s entire outer wall;
• The Fisht Stadium in Sochi (capacity 47 659) – originally built for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2014 as an enclosed, indoor arena, it was converted into an open-air football stadium for the Confederations Cup;
• The Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg (capacity 68 134) – an impressive stadium which hosted the climax of the Confederations Cup which saw Germany emerge as this year’s champions.

This was a great event for football fans across the globe, which saw some of the world’s best players in action – players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal, Claudio Bravo and Tim Cahill.
