The threat of online data breaches is at an all-time high, but for a company as large as Hyatt we have to wonder why they don’t have a better data security system in place.
Hyatt revealed it suffered a credit card data breach at its hotels for the second time in two years, last week. 41 hotels in 11 countries worldwide were affected and exposed. However, the breach wasn’t discovered until three months after the attack took place. The breach impacts customers who used credit cards at affected hotels from March 18 to July 2 of this year.
After much investigation, the breach appeared to be a malicious software code from a third-party inserted onto certain hotel information technology systems, said Hyatt. A list of impacted hotels can be found here.
Breaches took place at Hyatt worldwide, but the most number of properties affected was in China.
Hyatt isn’t the only major hotel company to have suffered a data breach in recent months. Multiple hotels, including the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Trump Hotels, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, and Red Lion Hotels Corp have all been affected.
