10 blog design principles to observe

When designing a blog, the KISS (Keep It Short and Simple OR Keep It Simple Stupid!) is a general principle to observe.

Remember, not all internet users have a 10MB broadband line, even in the developed countries. So if your blog is to cater to international audiences, it is important to observe the loading time.

After coming out with a list of 10 most hated blog design, here are possibly the 10 most important design principles of a blog:

  1. Simple and clean layout that is easy to navigate. The blog layout should be designed with the general readers in mind. If readers get frustrated when navigating the site, they will go to another site.
  2. Keep advertisement to the minimum. If you have a lot of ads, it should be well spread out in a well thought-out manner. Else reduce it!
  3. Good color scheme. It is cool to have exotic background colors like black or red, but if the overall color matching is bad, it can deter readers.
  4. Pictures should be shrunk to reduce loading time, especially if it is a photo blog.
  5. No pops.
  6. No “skip this ad” advertisements.
  7. Your blog design should match your content theme. If you are going to write about serious topics like java computer code, it may look funny if you start putting cute pictures in your blog.
  8. Indiscriminate use of Adobe flash. Some users have problems viewing Adobe flash due to setup issue, so you may lose this group of readers.
  9. Build a communication channel where people can talk to you, e.g. Contact Us page, real-time chat like ShoutMix.
  10. Test your blog on different browsers. Frankly, Internet Explorer (IE) is a lousy browser, and many functions that work in other browsers either cannot work in IE or it spoils the blog design. But with IE taking more than 49% (as of Oct 2010) of the market, you have to make sure that your blog runs well in IE.
The above list is not exhaustive, but forms a guideline when designing your blog.
